Campgrounds near Savannah GA

Okay, thinking waaaayyyyyy ahead.

We will be driving from NJ to the Ft. next October. We are checking in on a Sunday. We want to leave pretty early Sat. and drive for about 10 or 11 hrs. then stop somewhere for the night. We will get up early on Sun. and do the rest of the drive to put us at the Ft. around lunch time on Sunday.

Looking at at map it looks like Savannah, GA is about 11 hrs. from us and about 5 hrs. from the Ft. so that would work out good.

Does anyone know of any campgrounds right around Savannah that are not too far off of 95? We don't really need to hook up or anything. We will just sleep there and get back on the road, so something easy in and out off of 95 would be perfect.

Thanks for the help!

For what it's worth we've stayed at Skidaway State Park near Savanah. It's a little bit off I-95 and is a totally shaded CG on a barrier island. It's only 15-30 min off the interstate as I remember.

It may not suit your needs for being close to the highway but it was okay. As I remember we were in site 81 or 83 and they are not paved but dirt pull thru's or back-ins. So if nobody else has a suggestion this would be okay for you.

The KOA Savannah South is a good spot for an "overnight"

It's at Richmond Hill, just a few miles south of Savannah.

We've stayed there a few times and found it quite nice.

I was going to say Skidaway also but it's a good ways off 95 and a lot of lights and traffic are inbetween. I go to a class there every 6 months and it's a nice place for sure but just too far for your needs.

Thanks - I'll check these out. If it seems like too much added travel, maybe we'll just find a nice rest stop to park for a few hours. We don't really have to sleep all night somewhere, just enough to get a nap in and continue on our journey. We are taking two cars - my husband pulls the trailer with his truck and I drive my SUV with the kids, dogs, and some luggage (so as not to weigh down the trailer to much), so we can't just switch off driving.

It looks like the KOA is only about 1/2 mile off of the exit (if I'm reading that right), so that would probably be perfect.

Thanks again!

Yes, the KOA is just off the Interstate, but far enough that noise is not a problem.

It's easy in - easy out.

Walk over to the lake at dusk and watch the egrets roosting on the island trees!

Try Fort McAllister Historic Park in Richmond Hill

I know several have suggested the KOA and yes that is right off of I-95, but if you are willing to go about 10 to 15 minutes off if the same exit as the KOA, I highly recommend Fort McAllister State Park. This park is part of the state park system here in Georgia and is actually one of the few remaining confederacy era forts on the Ogeechee River. There is a campground with 65 sites for RV/Campers and the rate is around $25 per night. The sites are located beneath 100+ year old oak trees and have power and water. There is a dump station as well. Again, this is only minutes off of I-95 and is well worth the visit. You can visit the website at http://www.gastateparks.org/info/ftmcallister/

Have fun on your trip. Oh, if you need some ideas for dinner in the area there is a fantastic sea food restaurant also in the same area called "Love's". The fresh seafood is great as well as the catfish. One other bit of "trivia" the restaurant was featured in the movie Forrest Gump.

Stayed there once. Nice place and right off I-95. We most often go on down to Brunswick and stop for the night at Flying J. We always buy gas at Flying J with our RV card and will sometimes use their pay showers and quite often eat in their restaurants. So its a not so free place to stay but we like it for a quick overnight sleep.

Fort McAllister looks great. It does say that a two night reservation is required for weekend stays though. I might be able to talk to someone about that when it gets closer. It is in the end of October, so maybe they would make an exception since it isn't peak season. If we did decide on Ft. McAllister we could always just pay for the second night because it would end up pretty close to the same as one night at KOA.

We might decide to leave really early Sat. morning too, so we could have the afternoon and evening at whichever campground we decide. I always feel bad not to have time to at least explore the place. Then we could be up and out early Sun. morning to finish our drive.

We have stayed at the Savannah South KOA for about the last 8 years on the way down. Like it was said before, easy in and out, nice place for overnight, close to 95.

Just bumping here, but, give me time to get back from lunch and I'll get you some phone numbers for the area.

I am thinking that we should start up a 'Disney Friendly' RV park here in Savannah. I could make a mint!

I do not vouch for any of these (except the state parks) You will want to check them out on the web.

I have stayed at Ft McAllaster and Skidaway Island. They are great!

Skidaway is further from I-95, but, does have lots going for it.

Where did you get this address from? Everything is correct except the town. This is actually located in the Hilton Head town limits and not anywhere near Hardeeville...about 20 to 30 minutes depending on the traffic in Bluffton (where I live) which is between Hardeeville and Hilton Head...I just wanted to point this out for anybody else who might want to stay close to I-95. Another nice campground is The Oaks at exit 33 in SC off I-95. (Point South exit) It is a little bit further North, but not by much. Avoid the KOA at this exit. I personally think it's a dump. I can also vouch for Ft. McAllister State Park. You can make a reservation online through GA's State Park website.

We stayed at Lake Harmony Campground which is exit #58 off I-95 on 10/31 for an overnight stop on the way down. It is a nice place 1/4 mile off highway & was about $28 with AAA or Good Sam discounts.
