Wait List Warning

I called MS today to make a new ressie and ask about our existing waitlist. She told me we weren't on waitlist anymore because it was originally set up to expire 31 days before the date. I didn't authorize this or have knowledge of this, as the last time we waitlisted it expired 7 days before. So make sure you tell MS you want it to expire 7 days before the date if that's what you want!

The 31 day wait list should be used if your wait list requires less points. The 7 day wait list should be used if your wait list requires more points.

Why?

If your wait list requires less points, and you are on the 7 day list, the extra points will go into a holding account if the wait list comes through.

this happened to me too. We are leaving in a little over 2 weeks, and I have a waitlist at BCV & THV, and I called about a month or so ago and the CM told me that neither of my WL's had come through, but that she noticed that they would expire 31 days prior to check-in. She then asked if I would like that changed to 7 days prior and I said Yes!!
I still have had no luck, but at least I have had a few more weeks to have one of my WL's come through! I'll be happy no matter where I stay

My experience has been that the default is 31 days. You have to "opt-in" if you want the 7 day waitlist.
You can get into points trouble in numerous ways with a 7 day waitlist confirmation if not careful. Most MS will ask, but if they dont, then they most likely set it at 31 days.

As Disneynutz pointed out, you encounter holding and/or borrowing points in the penalty window which most people dont want when the system is auto confirmation. Plus you may be travelling or preoccuppied with preparations and not even know your waitlist confirmed. I have seen postings where someone was not aware their waitlist confirmed and stayed on a cash reservation, while their DVC room sat empty and they had to work it out with MS.

I'm a new DVC member (Sept). So, I recently read my "Vacation Planner". It says in there that waitlists expire at 31 days unless you call and request otherwise.

This has been my experience as well. For my last waitlist, the 31 vs 7 day expiration was never even mentioned. I was about to end the call with MS when I realized that the waitlist was probably not set up the way I wanted it. I asked that the waitlist be kept active until 7 days prior to check in and the MS CM had to change it from 31 days to 7 days.
