AKL Restaurant Tour

I know I read somewhere the AKL offers a 30 minute guided tour of their 2 restaurants. I thought you show up somewhere at a certain time for it but not completely sure.

Can someone provide the details for this?

Thanks!

Okay, I already am 40, but if I were to change my name, how would you know it was me?

It is the culinary tour which starts at the podium at Jiko. I have been and the start time was 3:45, though I have also heard of it starting at 4 sometimes. It is listed on the schedule of events at AKL. If you are not staying at AKL, perhaps you can have your concierge confirm the time for you.

Just show up. No need to reserve a spot, and it is free. You don't even have to be staying at AKL. You will be given samples to taste. I think I will try to do this again on my next visit.

It was a very nice little tour, nothing major but we did get to sample some bread & dips at Jiko & they explained the menu & the styling of the place then we went to boma sampled some soup they explained Boma. DS asked if ribs were on the menu that night the chef said sorry not tonight. But when we dined there that night the chef sent ribs out to DS which was a great surprise. Both chefs were very nice.

When I did the tour on October 10th, we never went into Jiko or tried any of Jiko's food. We were taken into Boma, they explained what food was on offer this night and its origins. We were then given a bowl of soup of our choice and also a Zebra Dome.

We did the tour last June, and we plan to do it again when we return this coming June. We were taken into Boma, given information about African foods, had a choice of several soups, got a Zebra Dome, and had the opportunity to ask questions about the food and restaurant. When someone asked how Zebra Domes are made, the chef came out, explained the ingredients, and gave his business card to anyone who wanted to e-mail him for the recipe. Then we were taken into Jiko for an explaination of the symbolism of the decor, given breads and dipping sauces to try, and taken into the kitchen when someone asked if everything really is cooked over wood. We saw the huge stack of wood in the end of the kitchen and the wood-burning stoves and ovens. Even DH, who doesn't know how to cook anything that doesn't go into the microwave, was impressed with the tour and asked that we do it again.
