Our DISboards Sign

Some of you have had a sneak peek of this, but I finally have all of the pieces for our DISboards sign. Rather than a printout, I decided to make something a bit more long lasting, so I made it out of 1/4" plywood.

Here is the process that I followed to make my sign:

1. Find an image or images that you want to use and print them out. To make them big enough, you may have to make a multi page image and tape it together. For my sign, I used four images - A truck camper, Musket Mickey, Indian Minnie and a Mickey head sillouette.

2. Place a piece of carbon paper over the plywood and put the printed image over that. Trace around the edges.

3. Cut out along the traced line using your tool of choice. I used a coping saw.

4. Sand the edges and apply a spray primer.
5. Put the image and carbon paper back on (lining it up carefully) and trace the interior lines.

6. Paint with acrylic paint and outline with a paint pen or a sharpie. I also painted the back and edges black.

Here are all of the parts together. I still need to glue and screw them together from the back and clearcoat the whole thing to protect it. I also need to find a tinkerbell pin to put in Minnie's basket.

I can't tell from the great pictures, but how big is your sign, and are the characters fastened to the truck camper? Did you use any special plywood, or how/when did you seal the edges? You may just have started a new thing around the forum.

Wow! Thank you everyone. I thought there might be some interest, but not like this! It really wasn't that hard to make if you can trace and color between the lines. It was more time consuming than difficult. You also might want to wear some kind of arm protection while cutting it out. I tried to cut mine off twice. Good thing I wasn't using a power saw!

The sign is about 1 foot tall and almost 2 feet wide.

When I took the picture, the characters weren't fastened to the truck (I was too excited and I had to share ). I am going to glue them on and also attach them with small screws from the back so that it travels well.

I just used 1/4" birch plywood. I got it at the craft store, but I would bet that it would be the same as you would get from Home Depot (just bigger and probably cheaper ).

While I was painting, I painted the back and edges black and I will be giving everything a few of layers of clear coat when it is put together.

I've been accused of starting things before, but I don't think it was ever anything like this!!
