I don't think my kitty can jump anymore :(

I have a 13 yo cat who injured her "kitty knees" (I don't recall the correct anatomy term) in a freak collision with our coffee table about 4 or 5 years ago. She had blown out both of the rear "knees"...a very rare injury in cats in one leg let alone two. We were told that since she was a cat, she wouldn't require surgery.

She did eventually heal with the legs simply fusing at the injury site. She lost her ability to bend her hind legs at that joint as well as the ability to jump using her hind legs.

She eventually taught herself how to get up on things about 3 feet high. It would require a tricky maneuver, but she would do it. All dismounts left her front legs absorbing the impact.

Recently, I've noticed that she had been staying on the floor more and for the past several days she has meowed for assistance to get up. So I do think her jumping days are now done.

Poor kitty.

Poor kitty. Wonder if her front legs decided "enough was enough"...

They make those little doggy stairs.

Our cat is now 16. She can still jump onto our bed, but long gone are the days of chasing her off the kitchen counters.

I guess you're going to have to start picking her up. Our big old Standard Poodle has pretty bad arthritis in his hips and knees now and he has trouble getting into the car. I have to lift his behind off the ground to get him in there.

It's so hard to watch our pets aging, isn't it?

Especially when I can remember clearly adopting her and her brother when they were 8 weeks old back in 1996. He passed away in Feb of kidney failure.

Yup. My oldest cat is over 14 years old. I remember getting her from a boss at work along with her sibling (who disappeared about 5 years ago) when they both were about 3-4 months old....

They used to display them on an "As Seen on TV" Endcap at Walgreens. I wonder if they still do.

We have doggie stairs, we got them at Pet Smart or PetCo or some other pet store. We have a mini doxie so we got her stairs to get on and off the couch, she uses them to get on, not so much to get off. LOL The cats use them tho, up and down they go on those stairs.

I wonder if they would be stable for her.

She has no flexing of her hind quarters so it is like walking on stilts. We have a step to our sunken living room that she can utilize, but it is just one step--so a very wide surface to work with.

I just wonder if she would trust it enough to try it.

She can flex the paw and the first joint though--so she has a little to work with.

Aw, poor kitty.

Filled up cardboard boxes work as risers, too. They don't look great, (unless you take contact paper & decorate the outsides,) but, they are a lot less money, you can put several anywhere and build them up to the various heights you need.

Our stairs are made of plastic not wood, they are open underneath which allows them to flex as needed, they aren't as solid as wood steps are. They had a lot of different ones, with more or less stairs as needed. You could always try them and if she won't use them you could return them. Our just sit on the floor next to the side of the couch, like I said our cats and our little dog use them.
