Just got laid-off from my PT job, uggg! Please pray for me.

The store opened over 4th of July and it is the second store for these owners. They HEAVILY borrowed against the capital from the first store and now have to cut back. They told me Thursday that they were "just" cutting my November hours since I also work FT and that I work the least amount of hours. They told me to see if anyone already on the schedule wanted a day off and I could work for them and also wanted by December availability.

Today, while I was at my FT job, my cell phone rang. They were very abrupt this time and said "we can't approved the hours you have requested to switch with others. Your schedule just doesn't work for us anymore so we wish you luck." Gee, thanks! Just weeks away from Christmas. They said they were going to make the others work longer shifts and have more salary people work so they can try and keep the store open.

If I had known this last Thursday, I would have already been applying for other jobs over the weekend! I don't think it was nice of them to say I could work for others and to give them my December available hours and then say no just a few days later.

I've put in one application and will put in more, but I need a second job. I tried Avon and also got a new FT job a few months ago and I just don't have the cleintele I used to have so I just hope and pray I can find something. I am using that money to help pay some medical bills!

Please pray for me.

Of course. I don't see why they would care if you filled in when others wanted off

I work PT also and my hrs have been reduced by 10 a week. I did apply for unemp comp and will probably get approved.
I do hope you find something else very soon. It's a tough time with the holidays coming

Unemployment?

Just wondering - how do you qualify for unemployment if you only work PT?

I suppose it varies by state, but where I worked (until early October), there was a receptionist who qualified for partial unemployment because she was cut from full to part time.

I worked part time and I'm filing for benefits too.

Here in NJ, if your hours are cut by more than 20%, you can get unemployment.

I would not expect to get unemployment, since the OP still has a full time job.

It sounds as if they have salaried employees that they want to work as many hours as possible. I've been there. It's very discouraging for the salaried emplyees who are having hours extended, as well.

Good luck!

Apply for unemployment benefits. If you are left go at no fault of your own, you qualify (doesn't matter if it is FT or PT). They will take into consideration what you make at FT job and you will to report wages weekly.

In PA, any reduction of hours or pay cut greater than 20%, UC picks up difference.

UPDATE - I have an interview - World Market

I have an interview at World Market on Wednesday. I called to see if my app would directly be sent to the store and spoke to the manager. She said it would be a day or two before she would have time to look at any applications. That was at 2:30. At 5:00 my phone rang and it was her saying she wanted to interview me either tomorrow or Wed - yahoo!

I'll post this separate, but just in case you work at World Market - do you know if they get paid weekly?

Thanks - Diane

I have worked PT for years and worked three different PT jobs. I collected two times after lay offs from my my first two PT jobs, but the caveat is that when you are collecting (at least here in MA) you have to be ready willing and able to work a FT job to replace the PT job. Of course, I just applied for some FT, but mostly PT jobs and ended up working PT again. They may have gotten a little laxer now that the economy is tanked. I got my new job and went off unemployment in June last year, a couple of months before the stock market took a nosedive.
