Segway Question?

My mom is not very good on her feet. LOL.
She is alway tripping over something.

The Segway Tour at Epcot is something I would enjoy doing with her.
Is it hard to do? Does it require a lot of balance skills?
Is it something she will be able to do?

Would appreciate any feedback thanks.

The great thing about Segways are that you don't have to be coordinated to use one! It won't tip over...it SHOULDN'T tip over that is. However, the tours are pretty pricey. At least, for us they are.

This past October, my son and I did the Segway tour and it was great! The one thing that the teachig CM's stressed all of the time was placing our feet onto the platform correctly and being able to step on/off of the platform. Once you got the hang of doing that, the rest was very easy. They aslo told us, that when we went out into the WS for the "tour" part, if we didn't feel comfortable doing some of the special hill climbs and slaloming around some posts, that we didn't have to. All in all, I'm planning ont taking my other son next summer and doing the Segay tour with him.

Your mom shouldn't have any problems. Have a great time.

I've been known to walk into furniture that's not there and trip over my own shadow. I did the Segway tour at Ft. Wilderness without issue.

If you're worried, have her do the 10 minute "trial" in Innoventions before the tour. Then she'll see if she can get the hang of it.

What happens if you get on and off incorrectly?
Would it go flying out of control?

If you don't step on it 'smoothly' and centered on the machine and you aren't used to the feeling of it, most first timers do the 'Segway Shuffle' and go back and forth a bit until you get your balance.
When you are in training, the first few times you step on, your trainer will have a firm grip on the machine to help keep this from happening.

I thoroughly enjoyed the tour I took, ATWOAS at EPCOT but my feet were killing me by the time I got done. Probably because you really are standing in one place the whole time on the machine and using unfamiliar muscles.

You also need to be careful to not run over a curb or an object that will tilt the machine suddenly, that can also throw you off. As long as you watch what your are doing, you'll be fine.
You wear a helmet and you are thoroughly trained before allowed out into the park area.

Depending on which foot you step off with, you have a natural tendecy to turn the handel the opposite direction and it will move the Segway some. To avoid that happening, you have to be very concious and step back and down straight with your foot. It took me two to three tries before it became natural to do it correctly. The CM's are very good about helping and correcting things they see you doing wrong both during the first hour of learning and out on tour.

Dont you think it should have a hand brake for stepping on and off and or bending to reach something? Make more sense to me. Sounds like a design flaw.

We've done several Segway tours and most people catch on pretty quickly. WDW is much more thorough in training riders than other places we have taken tours, plus they have governors on them to keep them at a very slow speed which makes it easy for beginners.

I second this. It's available for everyone to try out the Segway. I did it two years ago and as much as my DD13 thought her dad was a dork for doing it, it was fun and I got the hang of it pretty quickly.
