Am I the only one that really doesn't "get" Black Friday?

In the spirit of full disclosure, my kids are teens/young adults... they want cash!!

I use to watch black Friday like I hawk, I've always hated it especially at the malls. trying to find parking, after a few hours the stores are trashed and now literally homicidal crowds. Just not what I would consider a happy shopping experience.
Now I find the closer I get to Christmas, the deals turn out to be almost as good and through in internet shopping deals and free shipping, I'm skipping black friday altogether.

Any one else avoiding black friday?

Yup. I love a bargain, but I can't stand the chaos. I feel like if I am diligent enough, I will find the few things I want for a great price online.

Im already done shopping for Christmas 2009....it would have to be one heck of a deal to get me out on BF (think free cash at the bank 20 or 30 thousand might do it).

A couple of years ago our neighbors took their then 8 year old to Walmart to wait for a Wii. The idiots at our Walmart told all the people (that were nicely lined up outside) that they only received 10 Wii's and people would have to get in line in the electronics department once the doors opened. As I am sure you can imagine a stampede took place, and our neighbors kid got knocked down. Now she did not get seriously injured, but at that time I decided B&M BF was not worth the savings. (I am willing to risk a few mouse clicks on BF).

Additionally, I have a friend that is a regional manager at Best Buy...they have done studies and found that of the "promo/doorbuster" items sold nearly 75% are returned within the first 30 days. I can't tell you what that means, merely their own statistics. Personally I'd feel awful stupid standing outside in the freezing weather for 8 or 10 hours to buy something, just to return it a few weeks later.

But for those of you that enjoy the challenge...more power to you, just know I will be sleeping.

I'm with ya!

no way I would go out that early or in that chaos!!!!

I will spend time looking online - but that is it. I DO love bargains!

The last thing I want to do after a full day with family, is get up that early and deal with that!!!! We may hit the mall later for some light shopping, movie, dinner...but that is well after the craziness.

those that do it - more power to you, but it just isn't for me!

I'm with you. No Black Friday for me.

I'm pretty much done with my Christmas shopping already. I'd rather pay a few dollars more for a gift than to get up ridiculously early (or stay up all night) to fight the BF crowds.

As a matter of fact, I purposely try to avoid the malls and the Walmart/Target stores between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Ditto for me - you took the words out of my mouth (or off of my keyboard!)

The terrifying drivers, the fights for parking spots, the long check-out lines, the messy stores, the weary cashiers and staff...not for me. And I LOVE shopping and the Christmas season (fave radio station went to Christmas music 24/7 today and it is playing now!)

It is scary - many stores are opening at midnight on Thanksgiving/BF night this year to try and lure customers there - they REALLY must be hurting this year. (See other DIS thread on this.)

Good luck to all the shoppers out there BF ones...and the rest of us.

I don't like Black Friday either. Rude people, too crowded, not enough merchandise for the sale. Blech.

I was considering taking part in the madness this year for a few things anyway but now we are going to the beach instead.

I'm right there with you. I HATE being in stores let alone on Black Friday. I do all of my shopping online and find really great deals (you can always find free shipping and online coupons this time of the year), use a cash back website for buying purchases online, and use my Disney Visa (that I pay off every month). I'm already done with my Christmas shopping. Full disclosure though, I don't have any kids either and I think about what I want to get people all year so it's a lot less of a hassle to just find it online then to search a store for it.

That being said we were pretty poor growing up. My parents only bought us stuff (including new shoes/clothes) on our Birthday and Christmas. My parents never Black Friday shopped and were still able to get us lots of presents (and my Mom's the type that won't stop until she finds the lowest price).

I did the 6:00 at Target thing one year, and even though I got what I wanted, all I could think when I walked out of the store was, "Why did I just do that?"

I don't like being manipulated, and that is exactly what the stores do when they pit us against their competitors and each other. Making people wait in line overnight for something they only have a few of. Causing such a hype that people can actually be killed. REALLY, when did shopping become such a blood sport?! I don't know which is worse, the unGodly hours or the maniacal crowds. I don't need anything that bad.

Online shopping is sooooo nice, I am done with my shopping except to buy a bunch of GCs the next time I am at Target. I got fantastic deals on each and every thing I bought.

DW and I are almost done as well. We try to buy our Christmas gifts throughout the year. I personally avoid BF, but DW will occasionally will do shopping on this day. She don't do door busters. She waits and goes later on in the day. She can usually find some pretty decent deals. I always wish her my best and pray for her safe return.

I never really have a need or want of any of the "door buster" deals, like game systems or laptops. I usually hit WalMart later in the morning and have always found that the majority of the other sale items are still available. No need to go at 5 am.

I have NEVER done the ones they have now a day. However when I was teen I went a couple of times with a friend and our moms. HOWEVER....it was not anything like now. I too find great deals the closer it gets to Christmas and do most shopping online. You get free shipping and sometimes free gift wrap too. Black Friday scares me. We don't go near a store/mall on that weekend. PERIOD.
