20 years ago today: Berlin Wall

I happened to be in London, staying, by myself, in a small hotel.

I was watching the BBC when it came out that the Berlin Wall had fallen, and people were free to move from East to West. I was literally ‘glued’ to TV that night. Born in 1955, I had grown up to think that Germany, at least within my lifetime, would be divided. I also recall thinking “Drat! Germany whole again!” Of course, my fears have not been realized.

Five years ago I went on a cruise in which we visited Berlin. I ‘bought’ a piece of the Berlin Wall (I bet that pieces will be for sale as long as tourist exists and a piece of mortar and faded paint last). Nevertheless, I still have that piece of wall. It was an amazing experience for me to experience Berlin in person; yet I bet that I will recall that night, twenty years ago!, in a cheap London hotel.

I was wondering if anyone else remembered this.
I really was amazed and couldnt believe it was happening. After all those years the wall was finally coming down.

I remember it. I feel really old today! I couldnt believe that I can remember something that happened 20 years ago.

I was 8, almost nine.. My dad was stationed in Germany at the time, and I remember my mom telling me that it was so special that I lived in Germany when the wall came down. I dont remember a ton about it.. But I did watch it on TV with my parents. My mom still has a piece of the wall.

My cousin was in the U.S. army and was stationed in Germany at that time. He was there when it came down and got a piece of the wall I believe.

Ok, here's a tid-bit for you regarding the wall. Anyone remember Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In from the 1960's (I used to watch the repeats back in the 80's)? They used to have a segment on there called "News from the Future". While I was watching a looking back type of special years ago, they had shown a few clips from it. One of those clips had mentioned the Berlin Wall coming down in 1989. Now remember, this was a segment of news from the future, so it was said like it had just happened.
