When it rains...
I'm worried about when it rains, as I've heard Florida does get a lot of pop up showers and the weather is unpredictable. I hate the thought of lugging around a heavy duty poncho when they have the disposable one use kind that are tiny and would take up very little room in a bag.
Has anyone gotten by with just using the disposable kind? My thought is to buy like 10 of them, and after one gets used, we can just pitch it instead of waiting for it to dry all the way and then find a way to repack it so it doesn't take up half the bag/backpack. Any thoughts? thanks. |

That is what we do, buy the cheap ones, carry them on days when we may need them, and throw them away when we are done. Works great.

We take the disposable ones. So much easier to pack.

We tried those disposable ones before and we hated them. They are paper thin and cling to you, which is a nasty feeling when it is hot, humid and raining.
The quality of the Disney ones are worth it. I scrunch them up and put them in ziploc bags in my backpack so they don't take up much room. And honestly, you probably don't need rain ponchos for the majority of the passing rain showers. They go through very quickly...and if it is hot, like it was this past June , you may actually enjoy the rain.

My theory is bring the stronger Disney one on the trip, but only carry to the parks if rain is forecast for the whole day (tropical storm or some other event like that). For pop-up showers, the disposables are fine. You can certainly tell the difference but the disposables also take up less space.
The disposables are a bit small, tho' My husband barely got it over his belly....(Now don't anyone tell him I said that....he is not on these boards!)

I took a poncho the first year we went. I hated it. It kept me dry, but the feeling of the plastic clinging to me made me miserable and it felt like a sauna inside the poncho since I was already sweaty from the day then trapping it all inside the poncho. I just had the disposable ones so I don't know if a more heavy duty one would be any different.
This year on our second trip, I took a small, compact umbrella and put it in my bag. It didn't take up much room but was really nice for when those showers popped up throughout the day. It kept me dry for the most part when it was raining. Hope this helps.

We have never used anything but the disposible ones. I could never see lugging around one of those heavy duty poncho's with all the other stuff we take along.

We thought the small disposable ones were fine for the pop up showers. For the more continuous rain, I agree that the heavy duty ponchos are worth it. If it is crowded, the umbrella can be a pain. . .especially if you are trying to keep track of kids, in my opinion.
Also, if you have small kids, you might want to purchase ponchos in advance that are not the Disney yellow. When the skies open up, out come the yellow ponchos and it is a sea of yellow . . .everyone looks the same! We took different colors for our kids. |

It rained 9 of the 10 days of our most recent vacation in May of this year. We wore Disney ponchos every single day and on the day we were leaving the sun was shining. I just through ours away. After 9 days of use they were not in very good shape! We used Disney umbrellas too! Have a whole collection of them now because of this trip!

Depends on when you visit ...
First week of June through mid-October = Rainy season Good chance of a pop up thunderstorm/downpour anytime, anyday November through April = Dry season No summer thuderstorms, typical rain fall pattern like the rest of the U.S. |

Ok. Thanks for all the opinions. It will be December when we go, so hopefully it won't be too hot and humid, but I do see the one poster's point about if it rains all day a heavy duty one may be preferable.
Decisions, Decisions! I have to wonder if the cheap ones will fit over my hubby and MY belly!

I will pass along another tip I learned from this board just this week. . .so I can't take credit for it but it's a great idea and one that I will use. We got our ponchos at Target also. I think they were about $1. They are HUGE! For children, you can take a stretchy belt or a big headband (not a small ponytail holder) and use it around the waist to hold up the poncho. I thought this was a great idea.
