Well, until this gets moved....
Yes, you can totally do DLR without a car. We normally fly into SNA (John Wayne - Orange County) due to it's size and proximity. We then take Super shuttle (or a taxi) to our hotel. We always stay at a hotel on Harbor Blvd across from the park(s) within easy walking distance. I recommend the HOJO. Then we just walk back and forth to the park. We schedule the shuttle/taxi to take us back to the airport. If you fly into LAX, there is also a Disney shuttle you can take. We never fly into LAX so I can't offer up any details on that though. Shoot, even when we drive to the park, the car never moves while we're there.

I agree with previous poster...no car needed, and John Wayne Airport (SNA) is the best (IMHO) and closest one to fly into (unless you get an awesome/unbelievable deal into another airport). We always hire our own shuttle in advance, however you can easily get one when you get there. We stay on-site at either DLH or GCH, just because we love all that Disney has to offer. There are alot of good neighbor hotels within easy walking distance to DL...very good deals and nice hotels. DL, DCA, and DTD are very close to each other (definately get park-hopper tickets). If you decide to see other sites in Southern California, you can get the info about some of the destinations and shuttles at your hotel.
Personally, I agree with you...I love spending all my time at DL...even if you don't stay at DLH or GCH, check them out. They have beautiful landscaping, especially DLH (check out the Neverland Pool, koi ponds, and waterfalls). Both also have great places to eat as does DTD (great dining and shopping).

I like nothing better than when I get there I park my car and not get in it again until I go home. It is totally doable.

Definitely use the SNA airport in Orange. You will not need a vehicle. You can take A SHUttle to the hotel, and remain parked there until you leave.

We have been multiple times, and this year is the first year we will have a car (because we're going to Capistrano Beach for a week afterward). We've flown into SNA, Long Beach, and LAX (just depends on price). Very rarely do we go anywhere but DLR, but if we do, there's transportation available--tours, etc.
