Coworkers 24 year old son died of H1N1 **yes, underlying conditons contributed**

My dh's coworkers son died this week of H1N1- in his sleep- he wasn't even very sick. He had underlying medical conditions. My dh went to the visiting hours last night. It was really sad. Please pray for the family.

Why? Do they have underlying medical conditions, too?

Why are you always trying to start something? It's an honest question.

Not all of the people who are dying from H1N1 have underlying medical problems.

I am so sorry to hear about yet another death of a young person (no matter the cause).

My DS21 got both flu shots (seasonal and H1N1) 2 weeks ago. He has asthma, and when he's been sick in the past (mono, pertussis, pneumonia) he's gotten very sick, so I'm relieved that at least he's been able to be vaccinated.

I'm hoping that DS18 will eventually be able to get the vaccine as well. DS18 has only mild asthma (as do I).

So sorry to hear this, it is very scary, and I think everyone should be getting the H1N1 vaccine, I got mine last Friday.

At least 30% of young deaths didn't have underlying medical conditions. Everyone should have a healthy respect for this virus-it can kill anyone.

I love the use of absolutes. "Why are you always trying to start something?" FTR, I'm not ALWAYS trying to start something. I don't know anyone who is ALWAYS trying to start something, but (then again) I don't travel in groups of people who are prone to dramatics and melodrama, so my experience may be different from yours.

Secondly, it's the title of the thread that's contributing to the nationwide paranoia about the flu that's going around this year. It's designed to elicit a prescribed response: SWINE FLU KILLED A 24 YEAR OLD*! EVERYONE GET YOUR SHOTS OR YOU MIGHT DIE TOO!

I was trying to point out that the 24 y/o in question had underlying medical conditions that likely contributed more to his death than the Swine Flu did. I feel badly for that young man's family, but my feelings don't overwhelm my logic and reasoning. He could have just as easily died from the regular flu as from the Swine Flu.

If you are healthy with no underlying medical conditions, there's really no reason for you to get "the shot". The panic of healthy people running out trying to protect themselves are keeping those with underlying medical conditions from getting their annual flu shots.

So please, I'm not trying to "start" something. I'm merely interjecting a little calm, cool, logical reasoning into (yet) a(nother) thread about panic over a flu that, so far, has killed far, FAR fewer people than your average seasonal influenza.

*with underlying medical conditions.

Wow! Are you a doctor? Doubt it, because a responsible physician would not make a statement like that without knowing the patients history.

You're right always is too strong... but the majority of the time that is exactly what you do.

I'm not sure if his underlying conditions were actually known or they showed up on autopsy.

Yes, he could have died from seasonal flu, pneumonia, gotten hit by a bus, heart attack, fallen off a bridge etc. He died from H1N1. Said he didn't feel well, fell asleep on the couch, his Dad covered him with a blanket and the next morning his Mom checked on him and he was gone.

As far as you feeling badly for the family.... you never said so in your first post- just jumped on someone for saying they were trying to get their young adult children to get vaccinated.

For the past 2 days, I have not been feeling well. No cough, not really a fever, no chills or sneezing. But have felt a bit on the naseous side.

So if I take a nap I will die? No offense but all of you are freaking me out. I should not be panicking about this. I just don't feel well right????????

Carly Roach I have to agree with, the majority of those that have passed did have other things wrong with them and I do think they were severe.

Now I have high blood pressure...is that an underlying issue that if I don't get this vaccination I am going to die?

My mother works in a Cardiologists office, non of the nurses want to get it.

My friend works in ICU and another is a different hospital...doesn't want to get it. They don't trust it for whatever reason. So does that mean that if they get it they are going to die?

Its almost like a hysterical hysteria about where to get this shot right now. Its almost insane. But coming on here and reading this now freaks me out.
