Sorry, no good solutions, but I hope you find some. I too have an awful ant problem in my kitchen. It never fails, the minute I spray ant killer the cats come to see what I'm doing and I have nosy dogs! And the spray just doesn't seem to cut it.
I got a nasty bite from one yesterday. They really MUST go!

I know this may not be pet friendly, but mixing borax into powdered sugar and setting it where the ants are will get rid of them. It takes about a week, but they carry it back to their nest (or whatever ants have), and it kills the queen as well as the others. You can find recipes for this online. Of course, only you know if you can keep your cat away from it.

I tend to get overrun with those little tiny ants every Spring here. I usually buy the little Raid traps and place them around the entrances and the kitchen. Sometimes, when I notice the ants not falling for it, I'll pour a little Karo syrup into them. That seems to attract the ants and they die off quickly. Also, my cats are indoor only, so I do sometimes sprinkle the Borax around the outside near where I see them entering.
