On Kids and School and Disney and Our School District

I just found out from a girl who will likely be Salutorian or Valedictorian or at the very least top ten when she graduates, that our school district, which is the #1 public school district in the state, is fine with kids who take off school with their families to go to Disney. . .so long as they visit Epcot. (Epcot is educational!) Reporter of this information thinks you have to do an independent project while you're there (Art, she suggested, do an art project!) but mainly you have to visit Epcot. . .

Which, okay, we're in a small town in Louisiana. . .visiting Epcot actually WOULD be educational for a lot of kids.

This girl said there's no way she'd skip a week, not this year or next. (She's a Junior.)

Still, I find it interesting that our district, of all districts, is okay with Disney vacays. (Personally, I think they're right in that regard, but that's me.)

LOL I am from Louisiana too, my school system is fine with our kiddos going to Disney. This is our second year doing it and plan to do it again next year.

All my son's teachers sent him home a note saying have a great time!

When you say they're "okay" with it, what does that mean exactly? Do the students still have to make up the work they missed? Do they give the kids zeros for any missed assignments (like some have posted their schools do)? Do they just count as regular absences like a sick absence?

Even though the school is okay with it, I think the top ten student who presumably is taking difficult classes at school is wise not to miss school for a vacation. To me that shows her priorities are in the right place!!

Yeah, they don't care if our students go to Disney either.

i skipped the eleventh grade i was still in the top 20% of my graduating class. and i still missed school for several disney trips throughout high school. i graduated with honors, and 9 hours of college credit, and more than a full ride to my college of choice, a good portion of which was academic related.

amazing i could do all that with my priorities in the wrong place.

having a vacation doesn't mean that your priorities are in the wrong place. missing a week of your junior year? i didn't even have a junior year. and i STILL graduated at the top of my class, with more of a scholarship than most of the people who did have one.

I can only report what I am told as per Disney. I expect you'd have to make the work up when you got back from Disney, same as days out for being sick.

And personally, if I were in her shoes, I'd likely not go during school - but the minute my finals were over (whether school was officially over or not) I'd be hittin' the Disney with my family if I could!
