Rate comparison Disney Dream vs Magic family of 5

I know this is an apples to oranges comparison, but it’s the comparison that is correct for our family.

We are booked on the Disney Magic western Caribbean for February 5 2011, two adjoining rooms. We got the secret porthole rooms 5522 & 5524, cat 10, each has a window with a partly obstructed view. No insurance , no transfers. Total $4,624.45 for 7 days. This reservation was made onboard our last cruise so the price reflects a 10% onboard booking discount.

We looked at changing this to the Disney Dream 4 night. The Deluxe family porthole 8D was cheaper then 2 adjoining staterooms. Again, no insurance, no transfers. We were quoted $3,948.35 if we transfer the reservation, meaning we are still benefiting from the 10% discount. Edit: Disney Dream sail date is January 30 2011.

Trying to be as fair as possible, I’m thinking like this:
Disney Magic = $660.64/day
Disney Dream = $987.09/day
Plus I prefer the itinerary of the Western Carrabin over the Bahamas and with our oldest daughter becoming a teenager I’m liking the idea of having 2 bathrooms and a door for when she gets, umm, less then pleasant to be around.

Result: We kept our Disney Magic reservation.

As much as I would like to sail on the new ship, I would have also opted for the 7 day cruise. I've never been on a 3 or 4 day, but for me it just wouldn't be worth the drive for something that short. Plus, I like all the extra activities and more relaxed pace of a longer cruise. In short, I would have done the same thing!

We have an Aug 2011 ressie on the Magic for a 10 night Med cruise. Also booked one of the SPH rooms (#5020) with a rebooking discount, 1/2 deposit & about $450 in onboard credits (between DCL & Dreams Unlimited). When I break down the price of the cabin it works out to $186 pp per night with taxes & fees (but no transfers). The OBC will cover our gratuities and a few drinks. So we'll be keeping our Magic cruise & possibly will rebook for the Fantasy on that trip. The prices on the Dream were not as bad as I feared but I think they're higher per night per person than that. We also don't like the shorter cruises so IF we were going to do the Dream it would be a 5 n. But I think waiting for the Fantasy in 2012 will offer even more choices in itineraries so I hope it's worth the wait. (I am still jealous that we can't afford to do BOTH ships but I gotta think about excursions on the Med trip which will be fabulous compared to Nassau!!)

I'm thinking the same way. WHY would we want to cruise for only 5 days and 1700.00 More than a 7 day The Dream may be newer & bigger but just being on a DCL cruise is great. I'm staying with the original plan.

I will also be holding out for the Disney Fantasy- I like the longer cruises too. I just have to keep transferring my rebooking date that we rebooked in June- maybe by that time we'll have it paid off. LOL

My almost 12 year old feels the same way. He say 7 nights or more, or he doesn't want to go.....we have only done the 4 nighter in the past, and he thought that was much too short. I am hoping to surprise him with a back to back 5 night and 4 night on the Dream, but I am only silver, so can't get pricing until next week.

My guess is the Fantasy will do Bahamas cruises and the Dream will do 7-night Caribbean cruises.

Why do you think that?

At any rate, I feel the same way... holding out for a 7-night on one of the new ships. I just rebooked onboard a 7-night Mexican Riviera for 2011... but that's so long from now that maybe we'll just decide to move it to 2012 on a new ship. Maybe we'll do 2011 at the new DVC Hawaii!

Many people will book the newest ship just to be on it - no matter were it goes. It makes sense that in 2012, the Fantasy will do Bahamas cruises and the Dream will take over the 7-night cruises. I'm not sure what the Magic will do - but probably more exotic itineraries.
