Trick-Or-Treating Moms And Dads? - The DIS Discussion Forums

Does this happen in other neighborhoods, or is my neighborhood just... special?

What is with PARENTS (in plain clothes, not that that matters...) with Halloween bags, asking for candy?

Last night, we got about 15 parents who did this... They were like, "Can I have a piece, too?" It was sort of awkward... it left us feeling...

What were we supposed to say, "No?"

Do you get these too?

Yup!!I also get the ones that have 2 kids w/them and 5 bags saying the others are home sick or the ones that come back 2 and 3 times. It drives me nuts!!!!!! So I have candy bars for the 1st time they come and then I have small pieces for hte ones I know were already here.

Thats so not right!

I dress up with dd (8) and go out tirck or treating with her but..... I do not carry a bag or ask for candy.

I think as an adult if I wanted Candy that badly I could:

1- raid my kids basket

or

2- go to the store and buy some for myself.

That's tacky! Thankfully we didn't get those. Instead we got the 18yos with out costumes trick or treating.

In our old town we would occasionally go out for Trick or Drink

but never for candy

I agree-I think it's tacky for parents to ask for candy too....although, we once got a mother who was collecting candy for one of her kids who was home sick with the flu. I gave her extra to reinforce her for keeping her sick one home instead of spreading the germs!!

See now, the 18yos don't bother me... they are being kids... they could be out doing 1,000,001 other things.

I have had parents tell me there was another sick child at home and I gave them candy.

I can see a parent trick or treating for a sick child at home, but other than that it seems very tacky to me for an adult to ask for candy.

My kids each bring home a pillow case full of candy just from trick or treating in our neighborhood. I can't imagine a parent wanting more candy than what the kids bring home. We get so much candy that we end up giving a lot of it away.

My sister-in-law did this last night and I wanted to kill her. She has a two month old baby that was in a little costume and was asleep in a front carrier the whole time we were out. SIL went to the door with my kids and then asked for candy for her "little trick-or-treater" at every house. Usually she would perk up with "oh, you forgot someone" and shove her bag up for the person to put candy in.

Most people gave her a weird look, but they still gave her candy. DH and I were so embarrassed and made several comments (like "you really could just buy yourself a bag of candy", etc), but she didn't seem to think she was doing anything wrong.

She also was insistant about going to as many houses as possible. We usually just take our kids to maybe 10 houses of people we know that are well lit/decorated and obviously participating. SIL kept trying to go to houses that didn't have the porch light on and was then very annoyed when I told my kids they weren't allowed to go to that one and we kept walking. At one house that did have the light on, no one answered, so she tried to go around to their side/back door.

We had a lot of moms in their 30's and 40's trick or treating last night. At least your SIL spoke. Usually our moms would shove their bag in our face and not say "thank you". At our house your SIL would've gotten a Halloween sticker for her baby and if you have a sick brother, sister, cousin, dog... at home. You get "You can share yours, God will love you for it"

This may sound awful but we get anywhere between 150 and 200 people and we have plenty of candy but I can only handle so much rudeness.

LMAO! Wow, just wow.

We ran out of candy after about an hour and shut off the lights. About a half hour later, someone came knocking at the door. DH and I looked at eachother like, "Who would be here?", totally not expecting a kid. It was a kid AND her mom on our porch, and my DH said to the little girl, "Sorry sweetie. This drives me nuts. Adults don't need to be trick or treating...begging for a snack size candy.

I know there are neighborhoods that do special adult stuff...my BFF's neighoborhood used to pass out candy to the kids and "adult beverages" to the accompanying fathers.

If someone offers an adult type thing (like the Starbucks chocolates a PP referred to) to the accompanying adults, that's one thing, but to go up to someone's door as an adult and hold out a TorT bag is ridiculous.

We had parents come to compliment us on our decorations, but no one asked for candy. I did offer to some of the moms and dads we knew.
