Just analyzed DDP and TIW for us, ?'s

I just analyzed the approximate cost of dining for our May 2010 trip (using current prices though.) I have a few questions...

Is Teppan Edo open for lunch?

Can you use the TIW card for items not included in the DDP (special kids drinks or alcoholic drinks for example?)

In case someone is interested in my analysis, here's a summary...

We are comparing using DxDDP for 2 nights for 2 adults and 2 kids, (we're using it over 3 days though then going off property for 2 nights,) then returning and comparing using regular DDP for 5 nights for 6adults, 4kids vs TIW card...

2 nights DxDDP was $30 more than using TIW (not including cost of TIW because we'll need it for an upcoming trip anyway.) This only compared the 6TS credits and did not factor in the value of the 16 snack credits and 4 mugs. Considering we'd enjoy the extra food we wouldn't order if not included and would use many of the snack credits in place of other meals, I plan to go with the DxDDP. Splurging (food wise) was the point of considering DxDDP in the first place!

5 nights of regular DDP for 6 adults and 4 kids was $156 more than we are likely to spend OOP with the TIW. (About $10.50pp) Again this factored in only TS and CS meals and not the 50 snack credits. So at $3 per snack average, if we would use them it's about a wash. The decision to use DDP for this part of our trip was a lot harder. DDP would encourage us to eat more desserts and probably have us buying more unhealthy snacks to bring home to use up leftover snack credits at the end of the trip. Why get DDP then? My DH would have to be with everyone when they bought meals to get the TIW discount for everyone in our group. That would be inconvenient for CS meals. Since the value is close, the convenience wins here.

I have not had the TiW. (Did not renew my then DDE a few years ago.) However we had the DDE for probably three years prior to not renewing.

You should be able to use your TiW card for items not included on a DDP, such as adult beverages.

The card holder for TiW does have to be around, unless you spring $ for a second card. That part is certainly inconvenient. Which was only one of the reasons we did not renew.

Also, most counter services do not accept the TiW card anyway. What I recall was pretty much limited to the resort food courts. So if you are in a park counter service, the TiW card will not do you any good anyway.

That being said, if I was buying the TiW membership, I would probably pass on a DDP, unless it was the quick service dining plan. And even then I would debate that.

However I would only buy the TiW if I was really going to use it a lot. I think the price has gotten too high, and would go with a DDP.

TIW is accepted at three counter service restaurants at Animal Kingdom, but no other CS inside parks.

Teppan Edo doesn't accept TIW. And they do serve lunch. I believe the lunch menu and price is exactly the same as dinner.

We do the TiW card. What I like best about it is the flexibility. I have no credits to count, no snack credits that have to be used and if we want to eat at 2 instead of an adr at 6, ok, we can. No worries about losing a credit if we decide on CS instead of TS.

Many people love the pre-paid element of the dining plans. Comes down to what is more important to you?

Thank you! I didn't realize that the TIW card didn't include most CS places. It changes my analysis to be about $100 (vs. $150) more for DDP (than OOP with TIW) for our group of 10.

Can someone point me to a list of restaurants where the TIW card is good? I can't seem to find a list. Thanks!

We want to buy TIW for one trip next year when we're staying off property, but still had thought we'd get the DDP for this split stay. We may as well buy the TIW card early too in case we buy alcohol or something not included in DDP for this stay too. We'll go 3 times with 12 months so it should be a good deal.
