Do you judge a costume or lack of one?

Inspired by the "how old to stop ToT" thread. I see a lot of posters stating they would give candy to anyone as long as they had a costume. Does that mean an actual thought out costume, just some make up and a t-shirt/pants, or just a prop? Football uniform?

The reason I am asking is that I am wondering if my DS11 will encounter the "as long as you have a costume attitude" when he is out ToT this year. We looked for a costume and he "pooh-poohed" everything-cool, funny, gross, scary, nothing appealed to him. But, at the costume shop in the decorations he found a HUGE rubber spider-the thing's body is the size of a softball, and the head is three times as big. Legs are about 12 inches long. It's pretty cool, and since i was really tired of offering rejected suggestions, I said he could have it but we weren't buying any other costume to go with it, he would have to work around it. He was happy, so I forked out the $18 for it. We bought it a pink collar and leash.

So I come up with all kinds of funny things to wear...a t shirt that says "Bubba's Pet Walking Service" with a bunch of bloody holes in it. No way he says..so I finally give up..wear a t shirt, jeans and walk the spider.

So I am wondering if people will look at this very much thought out costume and think, "Lazy kid and his mom couldn't come up with a costume..where are those 3 year old Tootsie Rolls?"

Actually, I don't think he will have a problem, he looks like he is about 9. Just wondered what others thought.

Too bad he didn't want to wear the Pet Walking Service t-shirt. That would've been cool.

He'll be fine though since he's younger.

I wanted to add that I give out candy to anyone who comes to the door while the light is on even if I don't agree with them trick or treating without costumes or older than a certain age. LOL

I think walking the spider is cute. Maybe he can have a couple of "canned" lines to say when he's out and about. Perhaps you could convince him to wear some bandaids in obvious places or some fake wounds?

If anyone rings my doorbell on Halloween they will get candy, whether they are wearing a costume or not. No attitude here

Here's how I feel. I bought the candy for the specific purpose of giving it away. I don't care whether you come to my door in full costume or in a T-shirt. If you say "Trick or Treat", you're getting candy!

That was another one of my ideas. No go.

I do make sure that he says "Trick or Treat" and "Thank you", along with his younger brother.

I also give candy to anyone who rings the bell & says "trick or treat". Sometimes I find the parents of ToT's like candy too.

Happy Halloween!

I still give out candy to those without a costume, but I'd prefer they at least made an attempt. I think that sounds like a very cool "costume".

If you come to my door on Halloween and say "Trick or Treat", I'll give you candy. I like seeing costumes, but they really aren't necessary.

Hmm.. By the looks of this thread, maybe "I" could go over to town tomorrow and go trick or treating.. I wouldn't even need a costume - I'm scary enough..

I can't see to drive in the dark though, so I'd have to go in the afternoon..

I hope they'll give Christian some candy. He's 14, but he's still a toddler in his mind. Its hard to get him in a costume and I can just forget about a mask, or even face makeup. Im going to put him in an orange halloween shurt with camo pants and hope for the best. we'll go over to the mall and see how that goes.(its easier for him to navigate in the mall, rather than our very dark, hilly neighborhood.) Wish us luck
