Inspired by Candle for grades thread--did you have an ethics class for your degree?

I was wondering if teachers had to take an ethics class in college and then I began wondering about other degrees for other majors.

I majored in Television Production at UF--and we were required to take an Ethics in Media class as well as a law class. The law class extended to all degress in the Journalism school. I do not know if they had to do an ethics class as well as my ethics class was specific to television.

So did your degree require some type of ethics class as part of your graduation requirements?

I went through the teacher certification and we had no ethics class. DH had to take Ethics and Professional Responsibility and pass a major test on it for law school.

All Freshmen in my college had to take a "Freshman Experience" class. It dealt more with educational ethics, plagarism, etc. It also covered some general ethics too. I also took a Business Ethics class too....I don't remember if it was required or not though....

I'm in a nursing program right now, and we had to take a "Professionals in Healthcare" class as a pre-requisite. It basically went over ethical things and various different laws like HIPAA and OSHA standards.

I had to take ethics for both my undergrad in accounting and in law school. Admission to Bar required passing a lengthy ethics exam. Getting a CPA license now requires passing an ethics exam as well. Both require annual continuing education ethics courses.

Here's a thought though--would the concept of NOT selling grades for Yankee candles be covered in an ethics class, or would that just be basic common sense?

Well, DH took probably several different ethics classes as he majored in philosophy. DD and DS both attend/ed a Jesuit university and everyone is required to take ethics as part of the core curriculum. They also offer specialized ethics such as business ethics, medical ethics, computers and ethics and environmental ethics.

My college did not require (or perhaps even offer) ethics, so I guess I am the unethical one in my family .

I don't know--but I think the reason that some of the ethics classes exist is for many common sense reasons coupled with more serious issues.

For undergad, no. For my JD I was required to take "Professional Responsibility". Mind you, I took it as a 6 week short course over the summer, but then I also had to pass a national ethics examination thereafter.

Yes - so far I've taken a Media Ethics class and a general Ethics class (I took them together my first semester as a freshman in a cluster class that also had American Politics in it) and then next semester (I'm a junior) I'm taking a Media Law class. I know in the Journalism department all three are required for a degree at my school.

Nursing here, I think for undergrad and grad ethics was a curriculum strand that was covered in every class we took. I'm pretty sure this is required by the body that certifies that your graduates can sit for the RN exam.

In my education undergrad program, it was talked about in seminar classes, but not a full class devoted to ethics.

History degree here. No ethics class required for my Bachelors or Masters but I am required to take multiple ethics classes for my Ph.D. in Humanities.
