Does Disney care where you sleep?
Say two families are looking to cruise at the same time.
One is a family of 3, another 5. Could the family of 5 book 1 child in the room of the family of 3, knowing that the child would actually not sleep in this room? The goal would be to save money by not having to book a cat 4 or above or a extra room. You could link the reservations so all dine together. Is this allowed? Does anyone see a down side?

Yes it can be done. I just did it on a 7 night cruise. I booked one of my DD in a friends room and the entire trip my she stayed with us. I also have a DS and a baby DD. Everyone was fine with it. We did have our reservations linked but mostly to sit together at dinner. Also we checked in at the same time as I had to give my DD passport to my friend to check-in. No worries.

Question: Where is person number five going to sleep? Two in the bed, one in the bunk, one on the sofa, is number five on the floor?
I do believe Disney cares a great deal where people are sleeping. In the unlikely event of an emergency, the lifeboat allocation is based on cabin assignments. And the floor-sleeper would be expected to show up with the other family at their muster station, in one of their stateroom's life jackets. |

The child booked in the friend's room would be required to go to the lifeboat station of the cabin she/he is booked in. For this reason, I would try to make sure both cabin are in the same muster station.

No, DCL does not really care who sleeps where. It happens all the time that people have to book one parent in each of 2 cabins, but really sleep with the parents in one cabin and the kids in the other.
However....as above...it will be easiest if your cabins are at the same lifeboat station (for drill purposes, each person will have to go to his assigned station.) In the event of a real emergency, extra life vests are available at the stations. The other issues will be check in (again, easiest if the groups follow each other so you can deal with charging, showing documents, etc). If you are there together, they'll actually let you chect in together. And then there's the "where is number 5 going to sleep?" Unless they have an infant using a crib or two kids short enough to share opposite ends of one bed...there are only beds for 4 in the cabin. |

It can be done.
Just make sure the rooms fit/sleep the number of persons you want. |

Thank you.
As to 'where' the answer is on the floor. This is a 5, almost 6 year old. We all 5 slept 39 nights this summer on a 280 Sundancer so a cat 12 room would be bigger.

DCL does not care. Happens all the time. You can have guest service change the child's key to work in your room after you board. Things to consider:
Stateroom hosts are tipped per person and DCL tries to arrange it so each host has an equal number of tipping guests. SO when you move your child (if the rooms are not very close and sharing a host) the host for your room has more work with more people to clean up after. If you tip your host for the extra child for his work (fair to him) then the other host is shortchanged on what he should make for the trip (through no fault of his own). I think the best way to handle it is to tip both hosts for the child. That is still a lot less than the cost of a category 4 stateroom. As others have said the muster station is an issue. I would book the oldest child with the other family so they would be more likely able to handle going to a different place for both muster drill and in the highly unlikely event of an emergency. Also, move the life jacket for that child into your room during the cruise (and move it back at the end).

would you need a parental release from your friends to have their child on your reservation?

Since the parents are on the ship and checking in with them they should not need any release.
