Storybook character CHEAP costume?

My son is supposed to wear a costume for a book character on Friday to school. His halloween costume is out, since there aren't many books about legos! So, now I am stuck scrambling, but I refuse to buy something! Any suggestions? He is 6. Guess this is the school's way to diffuse the Halloween thing!

A blue suit jacket, a pair of black pants, a little fringe and a sash and he could be a prince like

all green with a felt hat, he could be peter pan
Remy the chef- a cheap labcoat (chef's jacket) and a hat (make your own)
Hercules could be done at home
A black cat (theres one in some story)
James from the Giant peach
thing 1 ( print center picture, wear all red, get blue fuzz from walmart)

1. A pirate from treasure island (most boys have a hat and sword)

2. Huck Finn/Tom Sawyer (plaid shirt, jeans/overalls, hat)

3. Sherlock Holmes (borrow a grown-up's coat, magnifying glass)

4. Any Disney character that comes from a book

Raid the toybox and see what hats/vests/boots he has

**Unless they have explicitly said it MUST be from a book, I wouldn't stress too much. Our school calls it a "Storybook Character Parade," but I think it's to avoid the "Halloween" title and to give them some ammunition to ban violent or scary costumes.

And Lego has a whole set of books now ... I've read most of the Bionicle ones with DS.

Harry Potter in his Muggle clothes. My daughters went as that one year. Just regular clothes, fake glasses and drew on a scar. One year my DD10 went as Junie B. Jones, which was just jeans and a tshirt I think. This year both my kids are cats for Halloween but I don't know how I feel about them wearing costumes to school; my 6 year old is VERY rough and tumble and dirty. HAHAHAHA! Best of luck to you!

PS-At our school, you have to bring the book AND write a summary about it so no go with it not being a book. :-(

We've had to do this before and one of my kids does not like costumes at all so here's what we've done:

a cowboy (jeans, button down shirt and cowboy hat)
farmer
pajamas w/slippers
baseball uniform (Casey at the Bat for example)
or any other sports uniform
Tom Sawyer--overalls or jeans rolled up, straw hat, old paintbrush

ETA: the boy from Magic Treehouse, just regular clothes plus a backpack and a pair of glasses (fake ones if your child doesn't wear them)

I have made many "animals" with felt and a headband and added a tail to any sweatsuit. Rabbit, cat, mouse, etc.... What is his favorite book?

Do you have a solid colored shirt or sweatshirt in a primary, Lego color like red, blue, yellow? What about attaching large felt (cheap at Walmart) circles in 2 lines of 3 and he could be a Lego? It could go with the Bionicle books. Do you have a leftover plastic fire hat from Fire Prevention Week? Maybe a firefighter??

Arthur

In kindergarten for storybook day, my son dressed as Arthur, from the books and pbs kids show. He looked adorable, and Arthur truly was one of his favorite characters. He wore a white oxford shirt, with a yellow v-neck sweater, jeans, some round, black harry potter style glasses and carried a small stuffed dog named Pal.

I didn't do anything for the ears. When you watch the show, you really think of Arthur and the other characters as kids. You don't even really notice their animal features after a while.

I found the yellow v-neck sweater at JCP, it was a size small - the smallest one I could find in the women's dept. Like you, I was crunched for time, otherwise I'm sure there are plenty to choose from on ebay for a low price. You could search your local craigslist (you never know).

Good luck!

After many, many different stores...finally found a yellow sweatshirt. I'll turn that inside out. Found glasses at the dollar store. Took a brown stocking cap, cut holes in it. Put in one of those headbands with the springy things like antennae off it. Put those through the holes, and glued on felt ears. Have a dog, will name Pal, and he will be sent to school with his Arthur book. So cute....but a real pain in the butt trying to find everything!

I'd have him wear pajamas and tie a bell around his neck to be kid from the Polar express. Cheap and easy!
