'Family' gift/gift basket ideas for the holidays...

This is a "spin-off" of a thread I started dealing with my frustration of having to spend tons of $$$ on each of my nieces and nephew and sil for Christmas. I got some great responses (as expected, this is the DIS)! Suggestions included a family membership to a zoo, museum, etc., board game gift basket, movie tickets... Well, I took the movie ticket idea and came up with:

Family movie nights gift basket:

6 month gift subscription to Netflix - $53
6 'movie sized' boxes of candy (Whoppers, junior mints, etc.) - $6 (from dollar store)
Box of 10 individual packs microwave popcorn - $2 (on sale)
Gift card to movie theater - $40
Bag of nachos - $3
Jar of cheese sauce - $3
Grand total - $107 For a family of 4 (add $10 to the movie theater gift card and its good for up to family of 6 $117)
It's the gift that keeps on giving, and I know it'll be appreciated!

What are your ideas? How would you do a game night basket?

One neat idea I saw with a game night basket other than including snack food and some different board games and playing cards was some passes to the local go-cart and mini-golf place in town.

Pretzels and chocolate to go with the movie basket.

BTW, I don't think I would even do the movie passes, just the Net Flicks.

For game night I would do 3 family games (mix of board and card games) with the same basic food items and maybe a big bottle or soda/or special drink like Hot chocolate and marshmellows for those cold winter nights (prefect for playing the games).

Wii Family gift basket

Do they have a Wii? I think the Wii is great for family fun.
This basket could include:
any multi-player Wii game
Wii controller accessories
Remote charger or extra batteries
Scorecards for a little friendly competition
candy and snacks to enjoy while playing

Last year...I gave Mr Coffee Hot Chocolate Makers with hot cocoa, marshmallows, spoons dipped in white and dark chocolate and 4 mugs. One year I gave a quesadilla maker and fajita skillet with salsa, gift card to grocery store, and tortillas. I live out of town from ALL of my relatives so I have to ship everything so I have to be really careful what they get. I really like the netflix idea. We are going to family gifts this year so thanks for the wonderful thread!

Love these ideas. I have to remember these for future gifts.

I got a game night basket one year from my Aunt when my friends and I were having Friday night game nights in High School.

It included
A Pizza Hut Giftcard
Popcorn
Popcorn bucket
I Love Lucy Monopoly
Hot Chocolate with marshmellows

We had a blast with it.

I remember a really cute one from another thread...

It was (ok, I forget the title)

But it was for driving around to look at Christmas lights - Hot Cocoa Mix, Travel Mugs, Fleece Blankets, Christmas CDs. Some people put those 3D glasses in them. I thought that was cute!

Here are a couple of other ideas:

If you have a family that is crafty you could do a craft basket with items to create something special.

If the kids are close in age and enjoy building you could get an advanced lego set and a piece to mount it on. The family could build it together and then display it.

Finishing Touches

Finishing touches actually come into play when you begin to assemble your basket. You can enhance the presentation of baskets, boxes, tins, hats, etc. by first filling them with:

coloured cellophane "grass"
crumpled tissue paper
a piece of fabric (try something with a Christmas print)
shredded newspaper or coloured paper
straw
raffia
Then carefully arrange your items over top of the filler.

Finish up by tucking in:

candy canes
foil wrapped chocolate Santas
other foil wrapped candies
small pine cones
a bunch of cinnamon sticks tied with red ribbon
Christmas greenery like the tips spruce and pine branches
Christmas ornaments
lots of small bows
mandarin oranges
nuts in the shell
small scented candles
Christmas baking (wrapped in cellophane)

Wrapping Your "Basket"

"Baskets" that are in actual baskets do not need to be wrapped, but if you wish, you can wrap them in cellophane. Simply gather the cellophane around the basket and tie at the top with ribbon.

This method also works for "baskets" made with hats, boxes, bowls, pots, plant pots, etc.

Decorative boxes and tins usually can stand alone without wrapping.

Rubber storage containers can be wrapped in cellophane as above or can be wrapped with wrapping paper.

Some "baskets" like tote bags, backpacks, shopping bags, etc. are best left unwrapped. Instead, finish them with colourful bows and ribbons.

SuperRhino Wow! What a list!

If you have a Dollar Tree around the holidays they have decorated/theme cellophone basket wraps. I think last year they may have had a roll also.
