Oh brother, Christian fell at school

His teacher called me around 1pm. Apparently he darted out behind someone on a swing. The impact lifted him off his feet and he fell hard on his rt knee and hip. He's 5'7", 120-lbs, so that must have been some swing! Anyway she didn't see anything obvious so I had them ice it and give tylenol. He falls all the time so I was not all that worried.

She called me again after she put him on the bus home, to tell me that she was really concerned. EVen though he wasn't crying, she felt that he must be in pain. It's not unusual for him not to cry from pain. He has had some significant injuries(2nd degree burns, broken bones) and never uttered a peep. So you really can't go by that. When he came home, however, I could hardly get him off the bus. He could not stand and walk on his own and I couldn't get him up to the house. I took him straight to he ER.

Thankfully, he doesn't have any fractures. His hip is deeply bruised/sprained and he has a badly sprained knee, though. He doesn't want to bear any weight or straighten the leg out. So he is playing quietly with his little toys on his bed. Poor thing. He has a wheelchair that we use for long distances so I think he will be going to school with that tomorrow.

Poor thing. He's non-verbal, so he can't even tell me how he feels. But I know he's hurting because he's not smiling or singing. He's just moaning and grinding his teeth. Every now and then he takes my hand and puts it on his knee. Owie!

Yeah, as if he didn't already have the ingrown toe going on...I took him to the ped last night. She concurred, it looked icky. She put him on Biaxin and bactroban. It looks better and it's less sensitive to touch. It ought to really get better now that he can't walk on it.

No pain meds for the knee and hip. He usualy responds well to Motrin, so unless he's really haveing a problem we'll just go with that. I have some Tylenol w/codeine leftover from his bout with 2nd degree burns on both feet last summer. I tell you, this kid might be mentally disabled, but he is ALLL boy.

Will he let you put ice packs on his knee and hip? That will help quite a bit if he will tolerate the first couple minutes before it gets really cold. After a couple days a warm bath will feel good but don't do that for at least 48 hours or he will swell too much.

He's not really letting us put the ice on him. They put him in a knee brace at the ER--he made short work of that. So even thought he's hurting, he doesn't understand why we're doing the things we do to help him. His nurse is here now, so I apprised him of the situation. He's going to carry Christian outside and put him in his w/c and take him for a ride. Samuel(the nurse) is a strapping young man, very physically fit--he can easily haul Christian around and I know he'll do his best to make Christian feel better. I already told him not to put him in the shower tonight. We'll just do a "bunny bath" sitting on the potty, I think.

Doncha hate when this kinda thing happens?

Can I be honest?

At first when I read the title of your post I thought you were reporting that some religious issue happened at school.

I hope your son is OK.

Yeah, we're pretty tired out. the ER trip wasn't too bad. They took him back fairly quickly, given his injury and the fact that he couldn't tell us what happened (they thought he might have a fractured pelvis, the way he was acting.) We were there about 2 hours total. Not bad for the ER. I'm just glad he didn't hit his head! He's still not trying to walk, but that's okay. I know he hurts, so we just let him rest a lot tonight. It took both of us to get him upstairs to his little bed, but he seemed glad to snuggle in. He's snoring now
