Missing Florida girl Somer.UPDATE:BODY FOUND Post #9

I'm watching a press conference on the news about the missing little girl from Florida, Somer Thompson. The poor mother is speaking, crying, OMG it's heartbreaking. I pray this little girl is found safe and sound. What a nightmare for this mother.

It was hard to watch for sure...I guess the Sherrif dept had their reasons for not filing the Amber alert immediately, but not until the next day? We all know if the location of the abduction/foul play is changed, it seriously changes the situation, I know it was reported and dealt with quickly, but for the public to be on alert seems like sooner announcement would be beneficial. I certainly hope that the girl is upset and ran away, there was something said abut an arguement and she ran off? However she is 7 or 8...

The whole thing is quite scary. I hope she is found safe.

There was no Amber alert initially because there was no information to send out. Unfortunately, the Amber alert system is often misused. There are a certain set of criteria established by the Department of Justice but since they are voluntary, they are often ignored. I think a lot of people feel it is better to err on the side of caution when a child's whereabouts are unknown. It was a system set up for known abductions, Somer Thompson's status was unknown.

yes, difficult story and circumstances. That is a shame about the system, as any there are always flaws.

I saw the mom this morning. I felt very bad for her. It seemed the last thing she wanted to do was be on tv--but you have to do what you can for you kids.

I'm confused on the timeline though. She has a twin brother--and I guess other siblings or friends or something. Weren't they walking home together?

From what I read she was walking home with her twin and older sibling - the 7yr girl and one of the siblings argued and the 7 year old ran ahead of the other kids out of sight. when the kids got home the 7 year old was not there and the kids went out looking for her. The mother called home from work some time later and was told the little girl never came home.

Where this happened is 20 minutes from me and around the corner from our doctor. Today's paper and local news say that she was walking home with her 10 yr. old sister, twin brother and some schoolmates. She had an argument with one of the schoolmates, tossed her backpack at them and ran ahead. This had happened other times and they just met her at home. They lost sight of her and when they got home she wasn't there.

It's tragic, but thankfully the community response has been great and this morning volunteers from NAS Jax joined the search too. Hopefully, she'll be found soon.

DEVELOPING: Body found in landfill. Is it Somer Thompson?

Juan Carlos Fanjul
JACKSONVILLE-- The FBI, FDLE and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are focusing on a landfill in Folkson, Georgia where the body of a child was found Wednesday Afternoon.

Right now police are trying to figure out if the body is little Somer Thompson.

"The body appears to be a of a small child. No positive ID at this time, the body was partially covered. All we could see were the lower extremities," said Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler.

The trash that goes to that southern Georgia landfill comes from her neighborhood in the Jacksonville area.

Her father, who lives in North Carolina, tells the Florida Times-Union newspaper that a birth mark on the body found at the landfill matches one on her daughter.

Somer went missing Monday afternoon after separating from her sister as they walked home from school.

Although they had no clues until now, cops suspected foul play all along.

For three days her mother has been agonizing over the dissapearance.

"I just want her to come home," said a grief-stricken Diena Thompson hours before the body was found.

Her estranged husband, who's heading back to Florida, feared this would happen.

"Why are 5 and 7-year-old's walking almost a mile home from school? Especially in an area where there are so many sex offenders," asked Samuel Thompson.

Authorities hope to have a positive identification by Thursday afternoon.

My thoughts are with that poor girl's family at this horrific time. I prayed that she'd be found safely, and it broke my heart to read this this morning.

Since birthmarks are unique there is probably no need, especially if they have a photo that shows her birthmark and confirm it matches the one on her leg. Or they could have photographed the mark on the body they found and showed that to the parents instead of having them go through seeing their baby like that

That poor girl, my heart goes out to her family
