Signature TS dessert v. special order cake

What would you do? We are going to Jiko and Citrico's next month and are celebrating our 13 anniversary. Would you spend $25 and order a 2 tiered mini wedding cake or would you just order the dessert off the menu?

Desserts at these places change all the time, never been to Citrico's but the desserts look great.

Probably not going to get back to these places until Oct 2010 so should we try what is on the menu or get a mini cake?

Paying $25 for mediocre general cake just seems like a waste to me. Special memories are what you make of them. Signature restaurants are very good at writing something special on the plate. I wouldn't pay the extra money for plain cake. I would spend the money towards getting a nice bottle of champagne to split.

We've had the cakes a couple times and they were NOT good. Last year we took our kids to DL for their bday and had a cake where DDs name was misspelled- ack!

I would stick with what is on the menu because it's something they do often and they do well. If you want to call ahead and let the restaurant know that you are celebrating a special anniversary (and remind them when you check in), you might get some special confetti on your table or something else.

My Dad called an ordered a birthday cake for the Yachtsmen steakhouse for me - it was just my friend and I for dinner. It was nice but basically a waste for two people.

I'd recommend just sticking with the desserts.

If you like basic cake, then I would go for the cake. But I think the desserts the restaurant makes are much tastier, interesting, and unique.

Special order cakes are very much a hit or miss proposition.
There are many horror stories on these and other boards about cakes not delivered, not decorated as ordered, not tasting good - etc. I urge you to do a search before you decide....
Disney can do some fantastic cakes - but they have been known to drop the ball. The Cake Dept & Disney Florist seem to be on a definite decline... I would be especially hesitant to order a special occasion cake knowing their track record.
Here's just one post on the subject - you'll find many more:

If you do it at Citricos they do a Mini Wedding Cake, which is a "personal" size (it's tiny!!). Kristy had one last trip and it is custom made and truely sweet, with a little white chocolate castle on top.
What we did - we all had the regular desserts (at GFC) and took the cake home with us - but it was such a nice surprise for Kristy!

I'll get you the photo tonight - it's 6am as I type this and I need to get to work,

Good poll! I'm struggling with the same question right now. I'm concerned by some of the stories I've been reading lately about cakes not coming out as ordered. DH has seen me looking at some of the elaborate cakes on here and loves the HM and pirate cakes but I'm thinking I might take a more middle of the road approach and if I order a cake go for something more simplified (and hopefully harder to mess up ).

Had a cake once and honestly it was not worth it. Now all we do is go with the regular deserts and enjoy them much more.

I would vote for getting two desserts at two places! Or, $25 worth of desserts. (the more the better).

Well its decided, we are going to order 2 desserts at each place! More to try and like others have said the restaurants will probably do a much better job with the desserts since they make them all the time and are known for them.

I can get plain ol' cake anytime!
