Those who had kids who had H1N1 -worried mom here
Hi Everyone,
My DD was swabbed and found positive for the flu yesterday. They said it was H1N1 because of the stuff going around here. Anyway...she came home Thurs at 1:30p from preschool...30 min later when getting ready for nap I noticed that she felt warm...it was 99.7. I wasn't too concerned since she just finished meds for a double ear infection so I was thinking maybe she didn't kick it. I laid her down and call the doctor's for an appt the next day to check her ears. When she woke up an hour later she was 102.7...we went in Fri morning and her ears and throat were fine so they swabbed for the flu....you know the rest. As long as she was on Motrin yesterday her fever was minimal or she didn't have one. She acted fine. Today she was good until about 1 hour ago. She's now 104.7 and that's on the tail end of Motrin. It's making me nervous being that high....anyone who's kids have been through this? Can you tell me what you experienced? Did your children's fevers get this high? My DD is 3 years old....I know it's just the flu and all that but it's so hard not to have those scary stories about the healthy children who got the flu and then bam were hospitalized or worse yet passed away from it. Sorry it this is so long...I just would like to see what other parents experienced with their children and how bad did it get before you felt they were out of the woods. Thanks for understanding and any info you guys have.

My kids have not had it but I just wanted to say that I hope she feels better. With the 104.7 I would probably be calling the doctor though.

DisneyDoc...I went and read the thread...it was good. I am wondering though if other's children's fevers went as high...without there being some complication. I've heard so much about that secondary pnemonia (if I spelled that right?) that is what is worrying me. I hate that it's the weekend and the doctors are in the office where I could at least talk to the nurses with a little more ease. I just don't want to call the on call doctor if this is a normal part of the H1N1.

No advice, but here's a hug.
I know how scary it can be when our kiddos are sick. Hopefully her fever comes down soon. Keep us posted.

No advice about swine flu, but I have had one with pneumonia. It was fever with a really bad not normal sounding cough. I am used to the asthma wheeze cough, and it was different. My doctor took one listen and sent us for a chest x-ray.
One of my son's friends had the swine flu, and he had a fever for four days. Good luck!!

I work for a Doc office. My understanding is that if they test posititive for the flu then it is not the swine flu. I asked this question so I could know more for my own understanding. There are additional tests that take longer that would determine if it is H1N1 and again they would not test positive for the flu in the mean time. Hope your little one feels better soon!

Okay that's just weird then cuz the doctor said to me that since it's a positive result and that's the flu that is going around out there that it's H1N1. my dd did get the reg flu mist at the end of Aug so she's had that in her system for a while. I know the mist does not prevent you from getting the reg flu but I thought it made the symptoms less. And I would sincerely hope we are not going thru something this yucky and she could still end up with the swine flu!

It is so scarry when you child had a fever like that. When our DD13 was a toddler she could spike a fever like that in less that an hour. Luckly she loved to play in the shower so we would just stick her in there with a few toys and leave her for a little bit. She never complained and it always worked to help get the fever down. Best wishes....

Her fever is now 102.9 so I'm feeling much better. We'll see what happens when we get closer to when the motrin window starts to wind down again. Thank you everyone for listening to me and all the kind words. I love being a mom but I never knew I could worry so much until I had these little kiddies! The create such love but they also cause so much anxiety!

Just keep pushing the fluids! popsicles are great for fluids and being cooling. It doesn't matter if she eats but keep her drinking. Kids can function very well with fevers that would have adults flat!

I am so sorry to hear obout your flu issue. Are you alternating tylenol and motrin? That could help keep the fever down. That way you could give her something every three hours. Also lukewarm baths help. The flu is a pain to go through, but you really don't want their fevers to be getting that high. I would try to stop it if possible, and if not definately get to the doctor.

We're in the middle of this right now. DS3 woke up today with fever and it went up to 104.5 this afternoon. Gave him another dose of tylenol (alternating with motrin) and a cool, bath and it has come down. DS8 had it 2 weeks ago and same thing, except not quite so high. Did you start Tamiflu? With the high fever and age should qualify to get it.
Previous poster said that it can't be H1N1, but that is wrong. The rapid swab tests for influenza A & B. If it's positive for A, then they test further for swine which takes a couple days. All positive tests are being called swine because the regular flu has not been around yet. |
