Question how long has your child's bout of the swine flu lasted?

My cousin's 13 year old has been sick since Tuesday with a fever, sore throat, and cough. She went to the doctor yesterday morning, however she didn't see her pediatrician. The doctor she saw tested her for strep throat only, which came back negative. My cousin called her pediatrician yesterday evening and he was upset that the other doctor didn't test her for swine and told her to bring her daughter back in this afternoon. She tested positive for swine, but the her pediatrician said she was on the downside of it and should be ready to go on her Disney trip this Sunday. If anyone else has a kid, especially around the same age, who has had swine how long has their bout lasted?

Several students in my class (1st grade) have had it this week.

Two of them, I know when they got sick so I have an exact time-frame for you....both girls developed fevers last Friday & STILL are not back at school.

And I have spoken with both mothers....both girls DID test positive for H1N1.

Hope your cousin's DD is feeling better soon & that they're not flying to WDW....I would hate to be seated anywhere near her on the plane.

My oldest was sick from a Sunday and returned to school the following Tues. My youngest was sick from a Sun and is returning to school tomorrow (almost 2 weeks out). We were supposed to arrive at WDW today and were told everything would be OK for us to travel in time. Keep a back up plan in mind and be prepared to change your plans as you see how thing develop.

For those of you whose children have had it, did they have a prolonged cough after the fever went away? My kids have had a morning cough for about 3 weeks following a 2-3 fever and cold symptoms. Thanks for the feedback fellow DIS parents! Are you immunizing for H1N1 if you get it in your area? Just curious, I'm on the fence still.

My DD15 had H1N1 in June (missed all her finals and had to go to summer school to retake them...arg!!!)
She missed a full week of school, she came down on a Friday and by the following Saturday was better. So she was sick for about 8 days. No lingering cough. It ended as suddenly as it started.

My friends daughter woke up Monday with cold symptoms, had the fever a few hours later and the body aches by Monday evening. Took her in on Tues morning and she tested positive for H1N1. It's Thursday and this morning she told me that the fever is gone and she feels almost 100% better. She was up and playing (she's 7) but she was still keeping her out of school tomorrow and she'll go back next Monday so she'll miss 5 days.

It can last 7-10 days...BUT PLEASE BE AWARE that alot of the kids with H1n1 are developing secondary pneumonia..I work in a hospital and we have seen alot of kids that are otherwise healthy developing secondary pneumonia following h1n1.

See my post above...My area has had a recent major outbreak in a local school system. With more coming in each day.I am going to vaccinate as soon as it is available. Both Dh and I are healthcare providers and a first responder and we were told we can't get it yet since it isn't available here. Our state had decided that this area was not a "priority" for getting the vaccine so we may not get it now till Mid to late November. They thought that the urban areas would be hit harder so they sent most of the vaccines there only to find out that the urban areas aren't seeing much of it yet.I have been exposed to it at work at least 5 times for sure this past week..I am sure I am going to get it before any vaccine is available. In fact, I hope that if I do get it , all 3 of us get it now since the vaccine may not be ready till right before our disney Trip and I really would rather not get the vaccine or the FLU for Disney.

Does anyone know about the kids needing 2 doses of the vaccine. We are told it will be available for us in early November. We could get it about 2 weeks before we go to WDW. However the kids won't be able to get the 2nd shot until we return. Will they be protected at all from the first shot? It is all so confusing to me. They don't need 2 shots of the seasonal flu vaccine.

Children under 9 years old actually DO need 2 doses of the seasonal flu vaccine if they haven't ever had it before. Children 9 and under need 2 doses of the H1N1 vaccine. They have no idea why the age discrepancy at this time though - under 9 for one, 9 and under for the other. I asked to clarify because I have a 9 year old. Both vaccines need to have the 2 doses given approximately 1 month apart. Technically that could mean (if you did both nasal sprays) that your kids wouldn't be finished with all vaccinations for 16 weeks! The 2 nasal sprays cannot be given simultaneously, and they have to be 4 weeks apart from each other. An injection and spray can be combined from what I understand.

Although we were never tested for it, dh and I believe our family had it in the middle of Sept. My girls and dh had a prolonged cough that has lasted about 3 weeks.

thanks fellow Dis moms - I love this board! DS-7 has had 2 rounds of antibiotic thinking his cough is sinus related, I think he and my DD-5 have had H1N1. We are in West Michigan and haven't gotten the vaccine yet. We have gotten the regular flu shot. I'm sitting here with DS-10 who had his tonsils out this morning - doing great, just hungry as usual! I hear it will be worse in a few days, I'm just relieved the surgery is over! Have a great weekend friends!

I asked my MIL this very question the other night. She is a nurse who works for our state and works closely with our state CDC on H1N1 issues everyday. She said that it takes 8-10 days after a dose for immunity to build up and that even after the first dose, kids under 9 will have some immunity, not full immunity, but some. Meaning, if they get H1N1 before the 2nd dose, they will have a milder case of it.

Be sure to check into this. I heard on a radio show that there is a single shot and multiple shots you can get either. One of them has mercury in it

My 16 yr old son started running a fever on Mon, started Tamiflu on Tuesday and went back to school on Friday(no fever for 24 hours, plus it was homecoming). He still had a few coughing bouts for about another week, but he seems healthy now.

Yellowstone was amazing and is a lot more inviting than Disney right now. Could we be selling it all in the near future? Maybe.
