Certainly not the "best kept secret" any longer, huh?
I am seeing ads and product placements for DVC a lot lately. Obviously having this many resorts (and Hawaii on the way) on the market in this economy warranted a bit more of a marketing push.
For whatever reason, it's bugging me. I can't quite put my finger on why though. Maybe I liked being "in the know" before DVC became common knowledge. Am I the only one? I want it to be a secret again!

If they need to advertise etc. I can't understand why the incentives aren't better for new members at the moment.

I am a brand new member, so I can't speak to OP's feelings, but I will say that I definitely think it's time for a new slogan. There is nothing secretive about it when you can't walk 30 feet at any of the theme parks or resorts without bumping into a DVC kiosk...(ok, possibly a slight exaggeration, but that is what it feels like)
I guess sales are a good thing, but don't call it the best kept secret for pete's sake!

I would never question Disney on marketing, as they seem to have it nailed. Back when we bought (2003), I would have to agree with the slogan as we had no clue about it. We stumbled upon the desk in our hotel, asked some questions, and thought about it.
We did not commit. I wanted to go home and take it all in, and after a good few weeks we decided to buy in. I understand where you are coming from, but I think there are a lot of people who still dont really know about DVC.

The real estate market has pushed some prices down pretty low at DVC. I was chatting with my guide a couple days ago and he told me that HH & VB are now selling at $80 a point direct from Disney. For someone who wants to buy there, that's a great deal!

Not to mention they have billboards every mile for about 30 miles surrounding Orlando.
I think you would be surprised at home many people have no idea about DVC. In such a diffused world of information gathering by people you need to advertise in even more mediums to achieve the same thing that a simple commercial on the Nightly News would have gotten you 20 years ago.

Nah, the "best kept secret" is that they don't give you any information about changes in the program unless they want to sell you something.

OKW and VWL Homes Yellowstone was amazing and is a lot more inviting than Disney right now. Could we be selling it all in the near future? Maybe. |

Agree 100%. Everytime we talk about it with people here at home, people say "what's DVC"? Then that's when the fun begins, telling them all about it

It's just typical Disney marketing. They're experts at manipulating our feelings toward product.
Does anyone here remember when Hanna Montana, whom nobody knew, was touted as being a huge pop star sensation with sold out concerts? (Hanna-wa-who? ) I firmly believe those "sold out concerts", if they existed, were simply small ones Disney gave tickets away to. Look at the merchandise industry for that character now. ![]() Similar deal with DVC. Did Disney ever want DVC to be a secret? HA! No. They just knew that the best way to spread the word and to have the most number of people want to be in on something was to promote it as a secret. I really dislike Disney marketing - I feel like they cheapen the value of everything they touch, but, it works to keep the profits rolling in and the investors to keep investing. I'm certain all of us here would hate it if they went under.
