Mother-in-law joining us mid-trip.

We went to Disney last summer and loved being on the dining plan. It was just so nice to not have to worry about paying for food. We would like to do the dining plan again next summer (2010).

We will be going for 9 nights. The first 5 nights will just be me, hubby, and kids. The last 4 nights we will be switching hotels and my mother-in-law will join us. Can we purchase the dining plan for me, hubby and kids for the whole 9 nights and just purchase 4 nights for my mother-in-law?

Since they are two separate reservations, I believe so.

Switching resorts will be two seperate reservations. You will have a 5 night reservation for your family, and a seperate reservation for the last 4 nights. With each reservation, there would be a new dining package. So yes, that would work.

Is your MIL on a res by herself? If she is, then she can buy, or not buy, whatever she wants for a dining plan.
Each person has to have the same under the res.
If everyone is on one res, then everyone on the res has to be either on the same DDP (or all not).
You will be booking two different res' for your family, not including the MIL, since you are switching resorts.
If your MIL has her own res she can book whatever she likes and that will not impact your res' with DDP.
Otherwise if she is under your res, she will need the DDP for that res, or your party will have to go without also.
