Nobel Peace Prize.

Erm.. anyone care to explain why Obama won this ?

(hoping this doesn't go under the "no politics" policy)

I have no idea.
Then again, I didn't agree with Al Gore winning back in 2007 either.

I feel like Obama won because his talks are inspirational, etc. Not because of anything he's done.

Maybe, I just have issues with this prize, period.

The committee said it honored Obama for his "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."

Obama said he viewed the decision less as a recognition of his own accomplishments and more as "a call to action."

"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the committee said.

he's one of three sitting presidents to ever win this, and i say good for him.
and i definitely agree with the last line. more people voted in obamas election than ever in any election the history of the world.

I wish he would have thanked them for the honor, and refused it so that it could be given to one of the other candidates that had been working a lot longer on peace initiatives. The deadline itself was February 1, which at that time he was only in office for 11 days. So, although he has made a big difference in many people's lives, he couldn't possibly have accomplished nearly as much as those other candidates also being nominated. I have no doubt that he may be able to accomplish things that are worthy for a peace prize in the future, I just feel like this is is giving an award before it is truly earned. This isn't about politics or who someone voted for, it is about giving recognition to someone that had more than 11 days of work striving for a peaceful place where they are. Whether it be the nominee in Iran, China, etc. This is a truly awe-inspiring award, and because of being awarded this so early really before any major lasting accomplishments could possibly take effect, he will have some pretty high expectations to fulfill which is a bit unfair. Ultimately he got it because the five people on the Nobel board felt that for some reason he deserved it. Ultimately it was their choice. I am sure that the decision was not easy.

The thing for me is that the nominee's were sent in only several days into his presidency.

According to Nobel's will, the Peace Prize should be awarded "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."[
"Who have done".

Ehh, maybe it was given to him for what he "might" do or is capable of doing ?

Don't worry, I didn't think you were trying to be rude :]

We talked about this in Social Studies class today. I think we should be honored because it's an awesome award to awarded. Whether I/you care about him or not. I can't really get into it much more, haha :]

i think he's done a lot even just having been in office for a very short time, just the fact that he was running did a lot of good for america i think, it made (some/most) americans embrace change (is; not having an older white pres but welcoming a younger black pres)
not saying that's deserving of the nobel peace prize but that's definitely something that deserves to be awarded IMHO.

and i think america should be honoured because they had a hand in making that happen. again JMHO

well. actually. the have been looking for nominations for a year before they were submitted. so that was right in the middle of the campaign/his election.

and america should be honored because our president was decided to be a (at least, aspiring) peacemaker. in this day and age, sadly, that is something rare among leaders.

He inspired awe, change, and HOPE just in his election. He has already changed this country and the world. Not to mention the things he is capable of doing/has already set in motion. He's a leader like never before.

Should America pat itself on the back? I'm not sure I'd go as far as to say that, but I'm glad we're evolving and becoming more open and peace minded.

I'm confused also as to why it was given to him (or at least this early in his tenure.)

He's been in office for what, 9 months?

I guess it just bothers me when there is just so many other people who have dedicated their whole life to a cause, and should be recognized.
