Husband lost job no magical celebration at our house this year :(

I sadly had to cancel our big celebration vacation yesterday My husband lost his job... I would like to say Disney went beyond wonderful customer service by refunding our Cirque and MVMCP tickets back. Never in a million years did I expect to get those refunded. That was the first time I cried after finding out Mark lost his job.

Does anyone have any suggestions on ways to downsize and cut back? I have been trying to figure out lower cost meals, lowering our ins coverage on cars from 300/500 to 100/300, called comcast and they switch us to a new package saving us 40 per month.... I saw a thread about things to do and would love to get a link if anyone has it I would REALLLLLY appreciate it

If anyone in Virginia knows of a maintenance manager position PM me

Thanks,
Lew

Good luck to him for getting a new job!

Be *careful* raising the deductibles. Only raise them if you have that money somewhere, OK?

Possible ideas...may not work for everyone though but just a thought if you don't do this already-

-Get rid of home phone and use cell exclusively
-Maybe get a part time job for the Christmas season...quite a few hiring extras right now
-Start cutting coupons if you don't already
-adjust your thermostat by a few degrees
-Sell a few things on Craigslist or ebay to make some extra money
-Like a PP said, no eating out!!

Sorry to hear about his job loss!!! Best of luck to your family!

Sorry to hear about your DH's job loss. I am glad that WDW worked with you. As hard as it was you did the right thing not going to WDW.

I would be very careful on lowering your car insurance coverage. If you get in an accident you could lose your home over a few dollar reduction in premiums.

I thought they upped their deductables is all? If not that is what I would do if you can. Also if you do not need it by law I would remove the collision insurance from any older cars that have no liens against them. The only way this comes into play is if you are the cause of the accident your car would not be covered but you would still have liability for the other car(s) involved.

Good luck.

I am ruly sorry that he lost his job. Hopefully, he can find another before long. However, if I lost my job, I would probably disconnect the cable and do away with the cell phone.

I am so sorry. But for the grace of God, go many of us. DH came last night and told me again how worried he was that their shop would have to close and he'd be unemployed. We spent an hour walking around the house/garage/yard deciding what could go on craigslist/ebay to raise a little more extra cash this week to add to reserves just in case.

We've been gradually cutting back since spring. The hardest part for me is not hitting the drive-thru for breakfast/after-school snacks/random sodas throughout the day but that adds up really fast over the course of a month.

The one thing I have learned is that we spend less money when we operate on cash only, and leave the debit card at home. I still don't know how but there's more money left over in the checking acct if I pay cash all week, instead of with just a swipe of the card, even though I'm still withdrawing to pay with cash. I know other people who swear by cash only to spend less too. If you haven't tried that yet, it's worth a shot.

Here's hoping an even better job opportunity appears for your DH very soon.

Sorry! That is really stressful.

Get rid of your 'latte factor'. All the little things that add up like gum from the gas station, take out coffee etc.

Definitely eating out is a huge one. Pack lunches and cook dinner at home. Also eating a good breakfast can cut down on the need to buy snacks mid morning if you are hungry.

Cut out junk food and things like soda pop that cost money and aren't good for you anyway. Unpopular suggestion, but cutting out booze can save $$

Try to spend at least a little bit of money every now and then on something that is a WANT like renting a movie, so that you don't just feel like you have a crappy, boring cheap life all the time.

Quit smoking if it applies (not that the stress of the situation will help).
