New York City For Anniversary. Need restaurant ideas. UPDATE. Went to Bar Americain

My wife and I are going to new york city Nov 20 - 22 for our 3 year anniversary. We are staying on E48th St at the Intercontinental. I was looking for some suggestions for a nice anniversary dinner. Not looking for a 5 star restaurant but something semi-fancy

Anyone have any ideas or recommendations?

The best meal I've ever had in my life was at Del Posto, Mario Batali and Lydia Basianich's restaurant in the Chelsea District. It is far from being inexpensive, but they start you with an amuse bouche and then you select your appetizer, pasta course and main course. After dessert, they serve you petit fors (sp?). They have an amazing wine list and were listed as one of the top restaurants in the country for their wine selection. The sommelier makes a real show of uncorking the wine as he primes all of the glasses.

There are a multitude of great places in NYC for dinner. If you're looking for a great steak, go to Smith & Wolensky's or the Bull and the Bear at the Waldorf.

For my money, I'd be going to Del Posto again.

Oh, and don't let the menu intimidate you. The waiter will explain everything that is written in Italian. If they have a rabbit stuffed pasta, I highly recommend it. It was the first time I'd had rabbit and it was delicious.

Both Smith & Wollensky and Del Posto are very expensive and if you decided you wanted to spend that much money, I'd pick other more romantic restaurants:
One if by Land, Two if by Sea – You’d need a cab downtown, but Aaron Burr’s 1767 carriage house is always at the top of the lists for NYC romantic restaurants. At one point, more marriage proposals had taken place here than any other restaurant in NYC, have no idea if that’s still true. http://www.oneifbyland.com/

The Four Seasons Restaurant - Ask to dine in the beautiful pool room, it is very close to your hotel and is NOT part of the Four Seasons Hotel several blocks away. http://www.fourseasonsrestaurant.com/index2.htm

My personal favorite romantic restaurant in the city and worth every penny La Grenouille. It is truly one of the most beautiful dining rooms around and they treat everyone, even first timers like royalty.

If those are above your budget, look at these:
Erminia - cozy Italian considered one of the ultimate date restaurants
http://www.erminiaristorante.com/

Jo Jo - A Jean Georges restaurant in a beautiful townhouse that’s much less expensive than going to THE ‘Jean Georges” restaurant. http://www.jean-georges.com/

And, if you are even more budget minded, then I'd go to Vivolo. A romantic Italian in a townhouse with a fireplace on both floors. The ground floor is wood paneled, cozy and sort of clubby while the upper floor is more like a formal parlor. Both are nice and food is good. Tell them you are celebrating an anniversary and request a table near one of the fireplaces.

Hope these help, there are SO many restaurants in NYC, it's hard to try to give recommendations because there are so many great choices!

Thanks everyone for your comments

suzannen, I think your suggestions sound right up our alley. I'm going to check those out. Thank you very much.

Congratulations!

My anniversary is right around the same time of year and NYC is very nice. One year we spent an entire Saturday in the City for our anniversary. After dinner we went to a Comedy Club for some laughs and some drinks, we had a blast. Have fun!

Congrats! DH and I just celebrated our 10th anniversary in the City Sept 18-20. We went to Del Frisco's for dinner on our anniversary (9/18) and then had the buffet dinner at The View (a revolving restaurant) located in the Marriott Marquis at Times Square. We enjoyed the food at both places.

Bobby Flay's Bar Americain. I went there for my birthday last year. It was quite possibly the best birthday meal I've ever had.

Etcetera Etcetera is EXCELLENT!

The food is so good. My friends and I (6), each had something different and every dish was so good. They will do most dishes in appetizer portions, too.

I recommend Le Refuge. I always tell people if they go, request a table in the back when you make reservations, it's very pretty. I usually get one of the specials. It's more of a local restaurant that's really good, then one of the big names.

We just returned from our NYC trip. We had a great time. We stayed in the Intercontinental on E. 48th St.

We ate b-fast saturday and sunday at the Comfort Diner which is on 3rd & 45th. This place was great and inexpensive.

We had lunch at John's Pizzeria near times square for lunch and that was graet. Coal oven pizza is something not to be missed

Finally we did dinner at Bar Americain. It was possibly the best meal I have ever had. It was certainly the most expensive but it was worth the price. You have to try the hot potato chips with blue cheese. It was to die for. I also had their special which was the new york strip with provolone cheese sauce and carmelized onion. It was absolutly amazing and cooked to a perfect medium rare. The steak had to be 2 inches thick also.

They have a great selection of local draft beers and an extensive wine collection too. The service was superb also. Our waiter was extremely knowledgable and even wrote "Happy Anniversary" on our dessert plate.

I usually tip generously. I tipped a little more this time (25%). When we were getting our coats, the waiter approached me and shook my hand and thanked me for being "very generous." It was a wonderful experience.
