upgrades?

Hi everyone! I was just wondering, as I am still learning the workings of DVC, if anyone has ever requested one view and got a free upgrade to a more expensive room/villa? (i.e. from AKV standard view to savannah view or concierge level. or from a studio to one bedroom, etc.) I know that I've heard of non-dvc members getting upgrades at non-dvc resorts but i'm just curious how it works with dvc? Thanks so much! I'm just curious!

VERY VERY RARE. There is a big difference between CRO (standard reservations) and DVC. The few cases there have been are due to a room going out of service and there not being another room available in the classification booked.

Upgrades in any industry are intended as incentives to entice those that may spend their dollars elsewhere to return.

As for Disney, those of us that have invested future vacation funds are not considered in that group.

It has been said: He doesn't spend an eyeblink of time with those that are already his.

As noted, upgrades are rale and almost always related to some reason like a room goes down or refurbishment issues. IMO, unlikely in the hotel industry, asking for a free upgrade is inappropriate with timeshares.

Totally understandable! I'm just happy to be a member of DVC and am happy to stay at one of these wonderful resorts. I was just curious.

I totally understand that upgrades are pretty much only given if something happens to a room. I've never asked for an upgrade nor plan to b/c well, i just don't like to ask for things. i was just asking b/c i had read on other threads about disney giving upgrades and wasn't sure what they do at the dvc resorts. i was just curious that's all. i'm trying to learn.

Put duct tape over the DVC logo on your jacket when you show up at a 'Pop' resort paying cash during a busy season. Next thing you know you will be at SSR.

DVC resorts operate at close to 100% capacity much of the time. It is unlikely there would be rooms available for upgrades, even if they were inclined to offer them. So if you really want a Savanna View at AKV for example, you need to book one because it's likely that room category will be sold out for your dates weeks/months before you arrive to check in.

My answer was more to a generic expectation that you personally. Often there are those that have the hotel mentality that do think it's OK to ask. I really don't have a problem in asking either, it's the expecting an upgrade and pushing the issue that is the real problem. For example, I'm typing this from a savannah view room at Kidani that I got as an exchange, we actually have 2 rooms and the other is a standard view. I could have pushed for them to both be savannah view and DVC could have given me both as standard view if they had wanted, that is their right within the rules. That said, many top resorts give exchangers the room type exchanged. There have been a couple of examples of a member asking for an upgrade at check in and being charged for the extra points within knowing it.

The last upgrade I had from Disney was pre-DVC about 15 years ago. It was an amazing upgrade. We had reserved Dixie Landings (Port Orleans) for Easter week. We arrived late at night. There were literally no rooms available at DL when we arrived. I just looked at them and said well what the heck am I supposed to do. The CM went to the back room. Five minutes later, he came back all apolegetic and said that if it was acceptable to us they could give us a room for the entire trip at another resort at the same rate we were paying; the other resort: Grand Floridian. Keeping as stern a look I could possibly control and expressing as much disappointment I could fake, I reluctantly accepted. Have never had any upgrade with DVC.

Sometimes it does happen when you don't ask. I did not have any room requests and had booked a Standard room at Kidani. However, after I had unpacked our bags, I looked out to see if I had a parking lot view or pool view and was pleasantly surprised that we had a Savanah. From our room most of the time we just saw the cattle but we did have giraffes and zebras and some others part of the time.
