Day 1, Part 2 - Afternoon Snacks!

Yak & Yeti

After exploring trails, saving the rainforest, watching crazy monkeys and going on an African Safari I decided I wanted a little snack. However, what I wanted wasn't covered by a DDP snack credit.

I went to the bar at Yak & Yeti and took a seat. I ordered a
Big Bamboo - $7.99

It was fantastic! I debated on ordering another but I decided against it and figured I should get back to the ride.

And the real reason I came to the yak & yeti for a 'snack' and I forgot to take a picture so I'm going to borrow my picture from my last trip report if you don't mind

Wonton Soup - Pork wontons, clear chicken broth and veggies. - $4.99

Wonderful! It was hot, the crunchies were crisp and exactly what I wanted.

Out of pocket - this trip cost me w/ tip $16.50 I think.

Everything Pop!

Ok this is a little cheating but when I got back to my resort I stopped by the main store and picked up my refillable mug and got some powerade before heading back to the room.

Worth: $12.95

Coming Up: Jiko's!

Day 1 - Dinner

Jiko

Around 6:30pm I started getting hungry for dinner, even though my reservation wasn't until 9:40pm at night. I figured hey, I'm solo I can see if they could squeeze me in. Lucky for me they could!

I sat at the cooking bar at the end next to the flatbread station. This sparked conversations with the flatbread chef that lasted until the meal ended 90 minutes later. This also caused me to be a bad dining reviewer and forget to take pictures of the meal except for one on my phone when I was answering a text message from a friend.

I got a glass of the pinotage and sipped it throughout the meal.

I started with the Seared Ostrich Filet - $13

Today was the first day they served the ostrich with something different. Instead of chickpeas, it now comes with a lentil salad. That part was eh. But the main part of the dish was great! 4 half dollar sized pieces of medium rare ostrich that were great and melted in one's mouth.

For my entree I had though about the Shrimp dish but my stomach was doing that thing where spicy foods and me would not have been good so I went with the standby.

Oak-Grilled Filet Mignon - with Macaroni & Cheese and Red Wine Sauce $39.00

Medium rare of course!

While eating this meal, I was talking to the flatbread chef and he 'made sure' I wasn't ruining my filet. We got to talking and apparently the place he worked at before Disney got very very angry when someone would order a great piece of meat well done and would cook it by placing in it the microwave for 10 minutes He said that the chef was eventually fired but that stands out to him.

We also talked about the various appetizers. I mentioned the ones I have tried in the past and he said their salads are so good. I mentioned I had never tried their salads before and next thing I know:

A small sampling appears before me of the argula w/
apple vinaigrette & a mini Cucumber, Tomato, and Red Onion Salad - with Rocket, Cottage Cheese, and Watermelon Vinaigrette.

I didn't eat all of this because I was getting full, but it let me sample it for the future. The argula was awesome! Tart but I like that. The Cucumber Tomato, Red Onion Salad had a vanilla bean dressing among it which was great. The cottage cheese w/ watermelon vinaigrette was not tasty. But that could be from the fact that I loathe cottage cheese and not the dishes fault.

For dessert I chose the Spiced Donuts w/ Coffee Ice Cream - $8

These were good! There were 3 donuts freshly cooked (I know - I saw when they came out of the fryer) and housemade ice cream that was splendid.

Overall this meal gets the same rating:

It continues to satisfy me time and time again. The coversations with the chefs were great even though my server kinda disappeared from time to time but that wasn't really an issue. One of the other chefs grew up in an African country I had visited so we also talked about that for a while as apparently not many people know much about it.

Coming Up: Day 2 Breakfast! Did I keep Captain's Grill or change my plans?

Well I have to say that I am really going to have to try Jiko again. When we went we had been on the Platinum plan and had already had an overabundance of food and were pretty fooded out if I can even believe I said that. On top of that, I had just literally come from a massage and had showered and dressed and headed down and was battling a sinus infection that made me cold and tired and OVER IT!

The odd thing is that my family didn't much care for it either. We love Boma and we eat odd food...ok, not the 13yo but the rest of us do. Hummus is my all time favorite dip even and we make falafaal at home even. Maybe I can get the girl to take just me there. I do have that TiW card now and that means alcohol too right?

Anyway, you inspire me to be "open" and enjoy the meals.

You ordered the donuts for dessert! We were supposed to have dinner at Jiko on October trip but changed plans at the last minute. I really wanted those donuts ... it's good to know that they were as tasty as I thought they'd be. YUM!!!

You definately should try Jiko again. I think in that type of situation almost anyone won't have had a good meal - I know I have had that happen to me before.

It probably depends on what you are in the mood for as some of things things sound way more out there than they really are.

The TiW card does cover alcohol. Its great! I use it all the time now.

I did! I saw that Nicki had them and I knew exactly what I wanted when I read about them. The chef was trying to get me to go for the mousse but seriously mousse I can get anywhere in Disney - Spiced Donuts not so much.

Day 2 - Breakfast

Kona Cafe

I woke up this morning thinking I would keep my reservation at Captain's Grille but decided I was in the mood for Tonga Toast instead.

I got to Kona when they opened at 7:30AM and asked if I was able to get in as I was alone. And of course I was able to get right in. The restuarant was never more than abour 20% full while I was there.

Started with Disney's vile coffee as the press pot isn't included nor did I think I was going to drink that much coffee to start with and a glass of pineapple juice.

Coffee gets a:

Such is normal disney coffee though. I should have gone with the Press Pot had I known I was going to drink more than 1 cup.

I had the Tonga Toast w/ Bacon - $10.99

I dont use the sides with it (no strawberry stuff, no syrup, no butter) I enjoy it in its full plain glory.

I never can seem to eat more than half of it though but I enjoy every banana, sugary, warm bite.

It gets a:

I was in and out in about 30 minutes which is fine with me! I had a full day at EPCOT ahead.

Day 2 - Lunch

Tokyo Dining

After a low crowded morning learning about our future world, running into another solo diser on living with the land on our own private tour (at least I think she was a diser but I didn't ask) and a short video about what Canada is more than just snow I made my way to Japan for lunch at Tokyo Dining.

This is my favorite lunch place in EPCOT - I think I go here every trip and usually order the same entree. Generally I don't have an appetizer or dessert but with being on the plan - might as well.

To drink I had: Tokyo Sunset $7.50

Mmmm. Alcohol.

To start I had: Garden Salad w/ Ginger Dressing - $5.95

I enjoyed it. Is it worth $6 for basically a plate of lettuce and a cup of dressing? Not really when you can buy at least 3 heads of lettuce for that price at home. But its Disney & such is how it is. On the plan, I would get it again. Off the plan, not so much.

For my entree I had: Ebi Tempura - $20.95

Excellent as always. The tempura was crispy and the shrimp nicely cooked. To be honest, I didn't touch the vegetables outside of the zucchini but I don't like mushrooms, sweet potatoes or asparagus.

For dessert: Chocolate Ginger Cake - $5.95

The top part is good. The bottom part a bit dry. Like the salad - outside of the plan, I don't think I would actually order this but it was nice to have a bite or too.

Tokyo Dining continues to make me happy & I'm sure I'll return again in 2 months! This time sans plan.

Oh it was yummy! I think the 11am is still breakfast - I think they switch over to lunch at 11:30 but I could be wrong.

Awesome! Yeah I think I"ll have it on future trips even though I can never finish it.

I know - Disney has way too many places to eat at! And once you get your favorites its so hard to branch out to all the new ones. At least its like that for me.

Day 2 - Afternoon Snacks & Ohana

Tequila Cave!

After an afternoon of exploring the world showcase and not spending any money despite things I want for my house in both Japan, Italy and China I wondered into the new Tequila Bar.

It was around 3:30pm and only had about 3 other parties in there. After reading the various margarita types, I chose the passion fruit. All the margaritas were $12.50.

This was great! Very smooth going down.

Everything Pop!

A little after 5, I returned to the Pop Century to relax and unwind for the day. I was not meeting my friends for dinner until around 9 and decided I wanted a little snack.

Cheese fries! - $3.29

Mmmm. Plasticy cheesy goodness. Not gourmet but hit the fat kid spot very well.

Resort Hopping!

As I still had some time before dinner and was ready to leave my room at the Pop Century I decided to go look at the resort decorations around the monorail.

Grand Floridian

The decorations here were great! You walk in and feel the holidays which I love. I loved the little details on the gingerbread house like this one:

See! Little mickeys on the lounge chair! Love it

Contemporary

The problem with going to the Grand Floridian first was well - Contemporary seemed rather lame afterwards. I mean look at this tree:

Its rather plain jane after seeing the Grand! Oh well...

I did buy a cookie here:

Haven't eaten it yet & probably won't until after I get home and take it to work with me for my stress sugar relief.

Ohana

I'll admit I was lame and didn't take any pictures here. We've all seen them in the other reviews and it looks the same since so many people eat here.

I admit I'm usually a signature dinner snob. I enjoy 2 TS restaurants most evenings and kinda avoid the 1 TS at dinner time. I came in not expecting much food wise but thus walked away happy as everything tasted good and I left rather full.

The salad w/ the honey lime dressing was refreshing.
The wings were hot and the pot stickers worked well with the peanut sauce.
Noodles were noodles - nothing overly exciting but tasty.

Our server was rather slow when it came to the meat service. Actually extremely slow. If I wasn't with others it would have been painful to wait for the meat. Luckily I wasn't alone so the wait wasn't too bad. I had like 6 shrimp and a piece of turkey and 2 pieces of beef. The shrimp were good, turkey ok and the beef a bit tough.

Overall - It was a good meal. The standouts to me were the salad and the pot stickers but I'm sure everyone has their own favorites there. We were seated around 9pm and didn't leave until after 11pm. Some probably from the talk around the table some from our slow meat service.

The meal is up to $30.99 a person now.

jiko sounds incredible! Thanks for the great reviews. Debating on canceling two ADR's to fit this in. How many character meals does my daughter really need anyway?
