Expired American Airline Miles - Bummed Out *But NATIONAL CAR RENTAL Rocks*

Thread title inspired by this thread:
http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1994748

I had the same thing happen to me. I logged into my AA account last night to check my mileage. We are thinking about going to Italy for Spring Break and I knew I had a bunch of AA miles and I wanted to see how many it would take to get to Rome. I was shocked to find out that all 70K miles expired back in June with zero notice from American. I can accept my own culpability in losing my miles, but I am still angry that American did not see fit to send me an email to let me know that my miles were expiring. I would have done something to keep my account active! It just feels underhanded to me.

Anyway ... I read on Flyer Talk that you can sometimes get miles credited from previous car rentals or hotel stays and that American would reinstate the miles. I had a couple of car rentals with National back in August 2008, October 2008 and December 2008. I called American and when pressed they said that they would accept rental car "miles" from October 5th and later. So, they only go back one year from today rather than back 18 months from when your miles expired. I looked up my National information and realized that I had changed my award preferences from "miles" to "rental days" which was why I found myself in this whole mess. I called National and talked to a woman in "Loyalty Services" and she was able to change one of my previous rentals from a rental day credit to miles . So what if I lose a free rental car day? It would have been way more expensive and way more of a PITB to jump through American's hoops to get the miles back.

Thanks National! I love you, Man . And yes, my next car rental is with National .

I think it's nice AAdavantage agreed to post miles to your account that weren't credited initially in order to reinstate miles that expired. By the way, every month they email an Aadvantage account statement which clearly indicates the expiration date of miles. I would call that notice. Even OVER-notice.

I know, you expected a special email with a huge red warning flag.

I'm glad you were able to get your miles reinstated.

Thanks . I'm glad that they will accept old car rental credits that were not credited. They didn't offer that though. I had to ask for it. They offered me another credit card .

I actually expected an email which I didn't get. I get endless AA Vacations emails for goodness sake! Obviously, I was not keeping track of my miles by mail (I freely admit, my bad) so I don't know if there was a huge red flag warning in my account statement or not . I'll check on my next one so I'll know what I'm looking for .
