Snow during Thanksgiving?

My family will be at DL during Thanksgiving week and I wanted to take my kids to see snow. We are from Hawaii and the closest they have been to the snow is at the top of Mauna Kea, it's not really snow more like crushed ice. Do you think there will be snow during that week or will it be too early in the season? Where would be the closest place to go. I know we could drive to Tahoe but that is a FAR drive.

Thanks for any help.

I think it'll be too early in the season for snow. You would probably have to drive way up North like you said, to Tahoe or even further for snow in November. That is, barring any freak weather patterns, etc. But if it's any consolation, DL will have fake 'snow' after the xmas fireworks and off and on through the night as they light up the xmas tree, main street decorations and do the IASW light show.

Thanks. I heard that Big Bear might have snow at the end of November. What do you think the chances are for that?

We were at DL during Thanksgiving last year and liked it so much we decided to go back this year. The fake snow they have at the park is great but it's just not the same as the real thing. Plus, the kids are begging us to see snow.

Thanks again.

We actually live in the foothills of Big Bear and November does seem a little early for snow. But a few years ago we had snow all the way down here at my house in November, so you just never know. I've heard that there is going to be El Nino this year which could mean more rain and also more (and earlier?) snow. Also, they actually produce some man made snow up in Big Bear to help with the ski season. I'm not sure when they start making it. There is a place up in Big Bear called Alpine Slide which is a place you pay to go sledding/tubbing down the snow. http://www.alpineslidebigbear.com/index.html The website says says they usually open in early november. I'm guessing that most (if not all) their early snow must be man made. So if it hasn't actually snowed yet you might be able to pay to see some snow.

I'm not sure if it would have snow that early in the season, but you might check out the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, about 90 miles from DLR. You start on the floor of the valley and rise into the mountains. If they did have snow, it would be a way to see it without driving in it!

It's not cheap, but we really enoyed it last summer going from the heat to the cool mountain air.

Call them and see if they ever have snow at Thanksgiving up there.

It's only October of an El Nino year and there has been some dusting at Tahoe, Colorado & Utah, so you just never know. Check out Big Bear site's webcams when it gets closer to your trip, I do believe they are the closest to DL. We're from Hawaii also and my husband loves skiing so when I made the family trip to DL ressies he made me make the "he & I" ski trip to Utah for February. I get my DL-Family fix and he gets his ski-fix ....

I was thinking about the Aerial Tramway too but wasn't sure there would be snow up there so early in the season. If it's snowed at all before your trip there might still be snow up there though. We went up one year in May and there was still some snow. Isn't that crazy? Snow in Palm Springs in May?
