Leave terminal after check in?

I hope to get to the terminal early to try for an upgrade for our December cruise. We will travel from WDW that morning via car service. The family wants to "sleep in" and is not happy that I want to leave early, but I want to try for the upgrade.

If we don't make a "grocery stop" on the way to the terminal, after check in can we leave the terminal and get a taxi to take us for a "grocery/beverage run" and then return to board the ship? I think we should have plenty of time and I don't mind the taxi fare that would be required. I really don't want to miss a possible upgrade, but not sure if you can leave the terminal once you have checked in.

TIA

Donna

Technically, you're not supposed to leave...but I don't know how they'd stop you. You will need to keep your photo ID handy and go thru security again.

Check with your car service and see if they would drop off the family at the port to check in and then take you for your grocery stop and then take you back to the terminal.
Another option would be to pick up a rental car the day before, since you pay for a 24 hour rental, do your grocery shopping the night before and then drive to the port the next day and drop off the rental car.

Are you hoping with an early arrival you'll be able to purchase a discounted upgrade, or do you think you will get a free one by getting there early? Odds are probably not too great for the former, and there's virtually no chance at the latter.

Why start the cruise on a bad note...upsetting the family with a departure that is too early for them? Have you called DCL to see what an upgrade might cost you now?

You won't get a free upgrade by getting there early--those have been determined ahead of time. If you've been awarded one, you might not find out about it till you get to the port, but it will be already in the computer.

The chances of purchasing an upgrade at port (discounted from doing it in advance) depend on what category you've booked and how full your cruise is. I'd certainly second the idea of a rental car--it's cheaper than the limo service, but is a bit more effort.

Paid upgrade

I know that I won't get a free upgrade. Setting aside a "little extra" to pay for an upgrade, if available. Don't want to worry with a rental--we are 6 adults.

Had not thought about some of us being dropped off at the terminal and others making the grocery run. That might work, if the car service will do it that way.

What are you hoping to upgrade to? on the 9/19/09 I asked about a paid upgrade from a Cat 6 to a Cat 3 and DCL wanted $1700 to do it. I thought that was too high for just the two of us so I decline. Just wanted to give you an idea. There were also about 4 families in front of me on the upgrade line and all the people ahead of me seemed to take the upgrade they were quoted...so there must have a been at least a few empty cabins at the port.

We were one of the first in line to check in at the terminal and then I forgot to head over to the upgrade line....when I realized I wanted to try for the upgrade there were a few families ahead of me.

A CM who works at the terminal has posted before that you can leave the terminal if you wish and then go back through security to get back inside. Once we get there no one can get us out.

mmouse,

I have a few questions. We are cruising this Sat. and were wondering about what time to get there to try and get an upgrade? We have done it before but I don't remember when we got there. We are in a 5 and would like to do a 3. If it doesn't work out we are happy where we are. I thought it was interesting when I called aprox. one month ago to see what cat. 3's were available and they had 15! Same price as before. I called yesterday and they said they only had one cat. 3 left. Could that really be true??? Do you think some people were upgraded free already to those rooms or that many people booked last minute for 11 grand??

Thanks

The terminal will allow you to enter the parking lot around 10 am. You can then go through security and up to checkin. After you check in go to the supervisor's desk on the far right of the counter to see if there are upgrades available. You can keep checking or stick around because things open up as people take upgrades. So if someone behind you has a 3 and upgrades to a 2 there wasn't a 3 available for you but after that person does their upgrade there would be one.
