If you're invited to a dinner party at 6pm...

If you're invited to dinner party at 6pm, what time do you arrive at the party?

Help me settle this discussion with my friend.

That's what I say, but she said that you should show up earlier (15-20 minutes early). I said that most people that are hosting a dinner party are running around like crazy the last few moments and they don't need to worry about entertaining people when they are trying to get things prepared.

If I got there early, I'd wait in the car. I think it's rude to show up early, ruder than showing up late. Most people I know show up a little late, up to 10 minutes, but never early!

This is me. I appreciate it when people show up about 5 minutes late. No more than 10, though.

I remember once we went to our friends for dinner-we were invited at 7:00. We got there at 7:00 and they didn't even start to cook dinner until 9:00!!

I guess it depends on the party. Are they eating at 6 pm?

I hate waiting around for people to arrive late & the food getting cold.

It's typical for people to show up 5 - 10 minutes early here. I would rather show up early than late.

There was just another thread about this for parties that people showed up late when the event specifically started at a time so being late would NOT be a good thing (i.e. movie party, laser tag, etc...).

Absolutely! I have lots of dinner parties and I would rather guests be a little late (10 minutes) but please don't come early. Those last 10 -15 minutes could mean catching me dressed or not.

Funny, around here, the main meal is served more than at least an hour after the party starts. We're pretty big on eating appy's and having a few cocktails first! I can't imagine dinner being served right away.

Same thing here. If my dinner party started at 6 the earliest I would plan on having dinner would be 7. I really would not appreciate anyone showing up early.
