Kids and food-does this happen at your house?
Does this happen at your house.. It is between meals, one of your kids states "Im hungry"..the mother states "go get something to eat!"..child responds "We have nothing to eat!"
Mother responds.."Sorry"..and goes on with her business??? Then, child rants and raves how hungry she is.. ![]() This is a daily occurance with my 2 older children. I have a fridge full of food, and closet full of food. Basically they are saying to me, I dont have boxes of cookies and candy filliing the house, so there fore nothing to eat ![]() I do keep gogurts at all times in fridge, we have some sort of fruit, this week banannas and peaches(they were on sale)..in the closet, is cereal, and pretzels..but apparently I still dont have anything in the house for these kids to eat. Am I the only house who goes through this? |

Only all the time and maybe 10% of the time they are right
. I usually suggest things like lima beans or brussel sprouts if they are 'starving'. Now that they are older though I don't hear if all that often, especially since DS17 will pipe up and offer to go to the grocery store for whatever it is they think they HAVE to have.

I tell them to go get a cheese stick, a yogurt or a cereal bar.

This is a daily battle at my house, snacks and meals that I give choices for. I go through the entire list of things available, and I get, "but what do you have?"
Finally I just tell them to let me know what they want or get it yourself..I'm going off to do something else. My kids are old enough to get most things for themselves.

Oh yes!! Been there and still am. I buy healthy food and as much organic foods as I can find. My daughter practically pukes and tells me every night that she isn't hungry for what I made for dinner. Then I hear the, "I'm hungry..." litany. My thinking is, she's not that hungry. Good luck, and I plan on doing what I'm doing because she is healthier than ever.

i may be the only one this doesn't happen to, lol. my daughter will say "mommy, i want a snack" and i'll tell her to go get it. it's usually a handful of goldfish crackers and a juice box. sometimes a 100 calorie pack of whatever. she's not a big fan of fruit, but will eat a red apple or banana if i offer it.
ETA: my brother and i used to complain to my mom all the time that there was nothing to eat, even though the fridge and pantry were always well-stocked. i expect when DD hits her teen years, i'll be hearing the same thing. Last edited by momof1princess; 09-26-2009 at 02:00 PM. |

Well, sure! DD still does it and she's 18.
However, I know I deserve it because I remember my mother repeatedly telling my sisters and I, "If you're REALLY hungry, bread and butter will taste good to you." We very rarely had cookies, candy, or pre-made snacks around the house. Fruit or bread and butter were how we lived it up.

I have teens. I will buy whatever horrible junk they write on the grocery list and when it's gone they wait until I go to the store the next time. Even when they were younger, having them write it on the grocery list themselves seemed to work. They would feel guilty writing on junk so they would write lists like "apples, carrots, poptarts, plums, yogurt, cheetos, applesauce..." surrounding the junk with good choices. Obviously all the stuff has to get eaten before I'm willing to go to the store again.
My mantra when they whine has always been "did you write it on the list?" or "start a list..."

yes all the time. Except it's not my daughter yet; it's my dh. He drives me batty. Every week before I go to the store I ask him if there's anything he wants. He never tells me anything. Then when I get home he always says, "I thought you went to the grocery. Where's all the food?" What he really means is ," Where's all the crap I can just grab and eat without having to make any effort whatsoever?" I mean how friggin' hard is it for a grown man to make a sandwich?!

![]() Last week I went to pick him up from work (Walmart) and got there early to do some shopping so he met me in a food aisle. OMG, that kid started piling the cart with tons of food and said to me, "You always just get me the same food so much that I've forgotten what I like now." Then I smugly reminded him of list writing day. ![]() Teenagers!
