Thumbs up Disney vs RCCL To Alaska price comparison

There has been so much discussion and frustration over the DCL cruise to Alaska. So much so, that I started to second guess our decision. So today I went and did a price comparison. I attempted to match dates, itineraries and sq footage of cabins for two adults with no air and no insurance on RCCL. DCL has insurance, but I did not have that break down. I believe it is between $200-$400. As you can see DCL is comparable to RCCL. RCCL has a 25sq ft larger on the suite and 64 sq ft smaller on the oceanview w/balcony.

DCL
Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah
Sleeps: 3 or 4
Size: 268 sq. ft
Room Configuration: Queen-size bed or 2 twin beds, single convertible sofa, upper berth pull-down bed (if sleeping 4), split bath with tub and shower
Total $ 4327.26 (price per sq ft $16.15 )

RCCL
Junior Suite W/Balcony
Two twin beds (can convert into queen-size), private balcony, private bathroom with bathtub and a sitting area with sofa bed. (293 sq. ft.)
Package Total $4,714.46 (price per sq ft $16.09 sq ft)

Superior Oceanview Stateroom w/balcony
Two twin beds (can convert into queen-size), private balcony, sitting area with sofa, and a private bathroom. (204 sq. ft.)
$3414.46 (price per sq ft $16.74 )

I have been on both cruise lines, but feel that the service is superior on DCL. I hope this helps.

I have been doing side by side comparisons of DCL, RCI, and NCL. The prices on DCL are looking really good. The NCL cruises with glacier bay in a minisuite, which is exactly the same size as a DCL stateroom, is much more expensive not to mention that you must pay for some of your meals and soda. RCI tends to run a little bit cheaper then DCL, but value wise, DCL still wins out at the price they are charging. Thanks for putting this together.

thanks for the comparison but it isn't a true comparison for two reasons
RCCL hasn't released their 2011 prices - on their website only the 2010 prices are avaialble and those have been out since the spring of this year so the prices could have already increased.

the insurance on a 7nt cruise on Disney for 2 adults is $109 per person
or $218 total

Here is one comparison that we did

DCL - July 26 Alaska 7nt sailing - July 26, 2011
Category 5B - deck 6 midship
No insurance or transfers
2 adults, 13 yr old
Total $6963.89

RCCL - July 23 Alaska roundtrip Seattle 7nt sailing - July 23, 2010
Category D1 balcony
No insurance or transfers
Total $4591.24
Difference of $2372.65
this is on an older ship though but the only one offering round trip Seattle for 2010

Rccl Radiance class July 30, 2010
Seward to Vancouver
D1 balcony no insurance or transfers
Total $4861.89
Difference $2101

It really depends on how many people and the date of travel

I selected the Aug 2011 from the drop down and did not see that the quote was 2010. Thank you for pointing that out. It only validates my observation that DCL is within the market range. For me the sq footage is the best way to compare.

Thank you for the insurance info. I thought it was between the 200 and 400 mark.

I agree for some sailings the prices are comparable but for others or for those with 2 or more children then the prices on DCL are higher

For those of you looking at RCCL the Rhapsody is a very old ship, yes it is has been refurbished but doesn't have all the bells and whistles of some of the new ships or even the Radiance Class which are elegant ships

My comparision was on the Radiance of the Sea for 8/27/10
compared to DCL 5C on deck 5 aft.

Let me throw this out there.
I can do a 7 day cruise AND a 7 day land escorted tour of Alaska on the Radiance (RCCL) for only $1000 more than DCL. That is comparing a D1 on RCCL to Cat 5 on DCL.
I have crusied on both ships and in both categories and they are extremely comparable. I actually like the layout on RCCL better.

I agree with you 100% on the layout. We really perferred that on RCCL. I wonder if the new ships will change their layouts?

The problem we had on RCCL was that the jr suites we were in only had 2 beds. So we had 4 people and therefore needed 2 jr suites. In 2011 I will have 5 people. On DCL I can get 1 cat 4. On RCCL I would need at least 2 jr suites. And the jr suites are pretty much the same size as the Cat 4s on DCL.

Thanks for the additional information. It does seem that the August dates on DCL are comparable to other cruise lines but we have to travel before mid August as the kids sports begin the last two weeks of the month and July is definitely higher priced on DCL

Also the Radiance class ships take you further into Alaska since they are one way and not round trip Vancouver - I haven't been to Alaska but everyone I have spoken to that has say this is a better itinerary.

We are still on the fence about booking one at all for Alaska and the information provided by everyone is very helpful

I am not sure where the OP's numbers come from.
I got a quote of $8442 for DCL Cat 5.
On same dates for RCCL for a D1 - I got $4896.
Almost $4000 more is comparable to DCL pricing???

On the Rhapsody maybe but on the Radiance Class they have some that sleep 4 as I have priced them for their 2010 itineraries with 3 and with 4. We aren't sure if one of our adult children will be going with us if we end up going

It was the Freedom. We sailed on it in August.
