Cheaper to fly on Mondays or Sundays?
I'm trying to book our spring vacation and Southwest isn't that far out yet, so I'm playing a bit of a guessing game right now! So I'll ask you for your best guess- do you think it will be cheaper to fly out/return on a Sunday or Monday?

I avoid flying on Sundays. It is usually much more expensive.
Generally we will fly out on Thursday and fly back the following Friday or Saturday. If we're staying 12+ days, our return flight is always mid-week.

last year we flew on Wednesday(cheapest) this coming January the cheapest day of our week to fly was Sunday, both ways- can you make some plans, then switch it by a day or 2 later depending on fares?

Tuesday and Wednesday are the cheapest days in my experience. If I had to pick between Sunday or Monday- MONDAY wins in my book.

Many people start & end their vacations on Saturday or Sunday, so resort destinations like Orlando see heavier traffic on those days. Monday will be slightly less than Sunday but the real bargains will be on Tues.-Wed.-Thurs. flights.

I have to agree with the Tues/Wed/Thurs usually being the cheapest (at least on SW). And the real perk with SW, is if you see a cheaper fare, you can change your flight with no penalty- you just have to commit to watching the website. I have saved SO much money doing this- you don't get your "money" back but you get the amount saved as credit to use on SW.
Just last night I changed my flight for Oct 6 from a stop over to a non stop, and didn't pay a penny extra (and saved 2 1/2 hours of travel time!) Once you are in the "two week" window, it gets rare to get a better price, but it's not unheard of. |

We live halfway between PHL and BWI and almost always fly Southwest. On the opening day, the prices I see are the same regardless of the day of the week so Sunday=Monday. As time passes, Friday and Sunday become MUCH higher due to demand. I've been able to get the same price for a Monday as T/W/Th even a month or two into the booking window.
What do the prices look like now for your airport for dates near the end of the currently booking window? That might help a bit for trends. Check Christmas/NYE times for higher season rates too.

we booked out winter flights on the first day they released flights and we got the sunday rate which was the same as the rest of the week. However, a few days later the Sundays went up. so you can check and if you are able to book on the first day you might find Sunday rates the same. Not sure if it is always that way.

Unfortunately the answer to the original question is "Yes, but..."
Sunday's before Noon or Monday's after Noon tends to be less expensive as Sunday Afternoon/Evening and Monday Mornings tend to be heavy for business travelers.

Tuesdays and Thursdays are often the cheapest days to travel. On SW, you are likely to get the same fares on just about any day of the week. Also, SW is awesome enough to let you change your flights (dates of travel, airports, and flights) with no change fees. They will give you credit for the difference if the fare goes down. For example I originally booked my flight from Kansas City to MCO for $79 each way. The fare went down to $49 each way when they had a sale. I rebooked my flights (yes you can pick the same flights you originally had but at the lower fare), so we got $120 in credit that we used towards booking flights to go to CA for my brother's wedding. If your only options for flight days are Monday or Sunday, I would definitely choose Monday.
