Able to change seat assignments?

I'm flying to Disney World next month with my sis and her 2 daughters. When we choose our seats, there were very few left in the non-prefered part of the plane. So we could only get seats 2 and 2. And those seats are not together, and are all pretty much in the very back of the planes.

When does Delta (our airline) open up those prefered seats for purchase? I'm wondering if we would have a chance of calling and maybe getting our seats all together, and more towards the front of the plane. It is not a huge deal if we can't move, it would just be nice. Or does Delta hold those seats for frequent flyers?

I believe it is 24 hours. At that time, you can also check in and move to preferred-flyer seats, in most cases.

It will be a lot simpler to do it online than to call though. DL has some pretty atrocious hold times unless you're a frequent flyer.

Ok, that sounds simple enough. Thanks!

I refuse to pay for seat assignments. (But I also don't care where I sit or if I sit next to my traveling companion, either. I figure the back of the plane and the middle seats get there at roughly the same time as the pre-selected, paid for seats, LOL).

Can't tell you how many times I've gotten to select those "preferred" or "premium" seats when I check in 24 hours ahead of time to print our boarding passes.

Op - Just see what is available when you check in to print the boarding passes. Worst case is you keep what you have and those will wrok for you even if they aren't ideal.

Enjoy the trip!

Many peferred seats typically can only be assigned to non-preferred flyers at the gate.

For the most part on NW/DL, any seat in the "preferred" section that has not been assigned is available to anyone checking in at no charge---I do this all the time. On NW, the fee-based seats are still charged if you select them, and I presume the same is true on DL, but don't know for sure.

Other carriers may have other policies.

On Delta and also a few other airlines, if they change the flight schedule on you, then you must phone in to reselect seats (and also accept the new flights they gave you or make alternate requests). After you have done this, you can go back to on line seat selection until the next time the schedule changes.

It is not unheard of to find your seat selections lost as a result of a schedule change, and when you called in you got new seat assignments from the preferred seat region.
