movies The Rock and National Treasure
has anyone seen both of these movies (starring Nicholas Cage)? If you have, have you noticed how the very end of the movie "The Rock" is almost a perfect lead in to "National Treasure".
I had never noticed it before, but tonight they had "The Rock" on (that's the movie where Nicholas Cage and Sean Connery have to stop a group of American soldiers / terrorists on Alcatraz Island), and as I saw the very end, I couldn't believe how much it reminded me of National Treasure. I have to believe that National Treasure was thought up because of that ending. Has anyone else ever noticed that? |

I was actually ON Alcatraz when they were filming The Rock! WE saw them film the scene where the watch tower gets blown up!
Funniest bit about it was that we were told on the boat on the way over to the island that they were filming on Alcatraz so that we were aware there may be explosions etc. However as we were walking up the pathway to the prison we were overtaken by a golf cart with a guy in the back covered in 'blood'. My DH said 'I hope he's part of the film!'...and I looked and said 'I seriously hope so that was Nicholas Cage!' Didn't get to see him again but it was funny that my DH didn't recognise him! ![]()

What is the connection? I love the movies and would be interested in knowing the connection you saw that leads you to believe that the Rock is the precursor to National Treasure. |

I don't want to give any spoilers for those who might not have seen the Rock, but if you have it, watch the very last minute of the movie (after the whole terrorist / Alcatraz part is over) when Cage and his girlfriend follow up on the clue that Connery gave him. It's like watching a scene from National Treasure. And again, I can't help but think that whoever made NT saw this and got the idea for the movie from seeing Cage in this scene.
I know it's just pure speculation on my part, but it really wouldn't surprise me at all. BTW, I don't think that the Rock is actually the precursor to National Treasure (totally different kind of character, and story), but just that the last scene of the movie might have given someone the idea for National Treasure. |

I can see a vague similarity, but it is really stretching it.
The church scene is pretty good though

The clue that Connery gives him tells him to go to a small church in Kansas - front row pew, right leg. The last scene shows Cage running out of the church holding the pew leg. He jumps into the car (that his wife is driving) and the speed away with the priest chasing them. He opens up the leg, and an old looking canaster falls into his hand. He opens it up and it's an old microfilm kind of thing. He holds it up to the light, and he says to his wife "Honey, do you want to know who really killed JFK?". But the whole atmosphere, his character, everything screams National Treasure. As a quick little test I showed my wife the last scene of The Rock, and she honestly thought it was a scene from NT that she hadn't seen before. She didn't realize that it was the Rock she was watching (I didn't tell her what movie it was until after). If you get a chance, rewatch that last scene again, and see if it doesn't make you think of National Treasure. |

Yes that does seem like national treasure!! I completely forgot the last scene of the rock. its been so long since i have seen it.
it probably gave the person who wrote national treasure the idea! i looked to see if any of the credited writers are the same for either movie and they aren't but for both it does say wga ( don't know what that is)

If you have the movie (or you rent it), just for fun, try the same experiment. Put it on the last scene, and then have someone (who doesn't know what movie you have) watch it, and ask them what movie they think it is. See if they don't say "National Treasure". If it were a different actor, I probably wouldn't have thought much about it, but seeing Nicholas Cage playing a role that is so similar to NT, and having the same basic theme (at least in that scene) of him trying to track down some hidden information about American History (as well as a conspiracy theory or two), it just seems like too much of a coincidence not to have something to do with each other. Again, it's just pure speculation, but it sure does seem likely to me. |

I own them both, actually I own a lot of Nic Cage movies, I'm a fan.
Anyway, yes I can see what you're saying but no, they are not related. I do like Nic in the "treasure hunter" role tho, and I do enjoy The Rock, even tho it's not a very good storyline it's still a good movie.

Seen them both and don't see any connection outside Nick Cage being in both.

I apologize if I'm not properly conveying what I'm trying to say.
I'm not trying to say that the 2 movies are in anyway connected. I don't think that the Rock was in any way a predecessor of any kind to National Treasure. They are certainly 2 different movies dealing with 2 entirely different themes. But, if you watch the very last scene of the Rock (which actually seems very different then the rest of the movie), I think you will see that there is a very strong similarity between that scene (and only that scene) and the movie National Treasure. Like I said before, not only do they both star Nicholas Cage as a very similar looking character, but they deal with the same thing - discovering hidden secrets of American history. I think that whoever wrote National Treasure saw this last scene in the Rock, and was influenced by it to write a new story based on what they saw in that last scene (using Nicholas Cage as the main character who chases after American history secrets and treasures). I know that there is no way of proving this theory, and that not every one will see it, or agree with it, but I know that both my wife and I saw the similarities immediately. Again, if you have The Rock, skip forward to that last scene, and then show it to somebody who doesn't know what movie it is and ask them which movie they think is playing. |
