Don't laugh - Fish Extenders on the Run...

Has anyone tried this as a fish extender? Using a shoe organizer? Each pouch can be taken apart to make one bigger one.

Shoe organizer with grommets for $5 on sale at popular fabric store

Cut in half for 2 fish extenders.

Glitter Fabric from Walmart $2

Matching ribbon, stickers from popular craft store on sale $10.

Notice that taking the seams apart, creates a larger pouch.

Thanks for sharing your ideas

I'll post a picture of the finished product.

All I know is lots of us have used these shoe holders over a bathroom door to help organize the stateroom. I think it's even a suggestion in the FAQ.

But it would be way too long for a FE, as these are designed to hang on doors.

My neighbor on my last cruise found a really cute fabric organizer & simply ironed on patches to symbolize each person. One was Ohio State, one was Tinkerbell & I can't remember the others. It looked super simple for someone rushed.

I'm new at this whole cruising thing so I have some DUMB questions

1. What is a fish extender and why is it called that
2. Why do you have it there?

A Fish Extender is a Pocketed Hanging Organizer that you hang from the Metal FISH Hook that is outside each stateroom door.

People hang them there when they participate in a FE Gift Exchange organized on their Cruise Meets board (there is a link to Cruise meets at the top of the forum). It's kind of like a secret santa.

Thanks for posting this. I could use half for my organizer in the cabin & half for the FE. Can you be more specific on the "popular fabric store" and if it was in store or on line. PM me if you prefer.

I think this would be a very nice fish extender! If I understand you correctly, you'll be cutting it in half, right down the middle, correct? And then making each pouch larger for a total of 4 pockets, right?

It might be a little longer than most, and you'll have to tie some sort of a cord through the top to hang it from your fish. But otherwise - I think it's a great idea!

1. What is a fish extender and why is it called that?

There is a thread on the main DCL forum site of pictures of people's stateroom doors. Next to the door is a metal fish that DCL uses to post important paperwork. Take a look at these pictures to see what I mean.

2. Why do you have it there?

Hang one outside your door and you will find goodies galore in it! Most cruises have a meet thread where they participate in what is called Fish Extender (FE) Exchange. By participating in this you agree to leave small gifts in others FE's and recieve gifts in return. Search through the forum, you'll find MANY threads about where to get one, how to make your own, and TONS of ideas of goodies.

Here are the stores:

Joanne's Fabrics for the shoe organizer on sale from $14.99 to $5 approx.
Big Lots also has shoe organizers.
Walmart for stickers, fabric glue (Liquid Stitch) and glitter fabric
Michaels Craft store for the Mickey Tags (adhesive), stickers and ribbon.

I may not need the ribbon even though it matches the glitter letters beautifully. This is just to use as the edging after I cut down the middle. When I started taking it apart, I noticed I can use the pieces that I'm taking off for the edging. I only need 3 pockets, so it would be about 33 inches long. I have a beautiful hot pink ribbon from a box of Godiva Chocolates to use to hang from the fish hook.

I have boys, but Joanne's Fabrics had beautiful fabric with Cinderella and glitter on her dress.

I hope it works out.

Looks great! Easier to make than the No Sew FEs.

Next time I go on a Christmas cruise I´m following my original idea for making a FE extender. I´d rather design my own other than the typical ones shown on the threads. First time making one and thought they had to be the same but decorated differently.
