Agree that the pools are not salt water. Whether or not you can consider them "fresh" water is pretty questionable with the frequent closures.

Yeah, they should do a cruise documentary called gray water.

The water gets a little seasoned like making a soup

So are the pools 'clean' at the start of the cruise -- like safe to swim in the first day but then....uh...not so much?

And this is possibly a dumb question, but why don't they treat them with chlorine?

The pools are crystal clear to begin with. It's the people who make them dirty. They do treat them with a lot of chlorine, but there's only so much it can handle. Think oil slick on the top with everyone's sunblock coming off. I have always called the ship pools people soup and we don't usually use them. If you get on asap on embarkation day the pools will be nice and clean and empty.

Now I'm a bit weary, We never really did the pool thing, since DS didn't like/feared the pools.
Now he likes it as he recently learned to swim so he is not afraid of the water, but now I am because it sounds like yuck . I assumed they clean it nightly, thorough filtering, a bit more chlorine, and etc.. if im wrong then I guess we we will skip the pool. If they do get a nice cleaning nightly we will do early morning swims.
Would love to know which though

i haven't really heard of anyone getting ill from using the pools. having said that, it scares me when i watch all the adults that hang around in the pool drinking and never get out. kind of makes me wonder if the pool has become a potty. now thats scary

I would assume they clean them at night, but I don't know for sure.

ok now I am totally avoiding getting in the pool and the hot tubs for that matter

The pool area was fun for people watching though, we didn't get in the pool last cruise but grabbed a couple loungers, a few breakfast type drinks, and relaxed by the pool for breakfast on sea days. Then by say 11 am we watched the show, parents trying to keep track of kids (total chaos), the array of wardrobe styles or lack there of, shoving to get on aquaduck, the arguments, but best of all was a lovely elderly couple toasting their vacation quietly at one of the tables just almost out of sight, and completely in their own world amid the pool chaos. I hope we get to be that couple when that time comes.

The pool is closed, drained and thoroughly cleaned if there is an accident.

It has been a long time but I seem to recall seeing at least one pool drained in the wee hours, not sure if they are also cleaned and/or if this was only on the last night so they would be getting ready for the next cruise. My memory is a little foggy on the details.

Anyone actually been on a ship with salt water pools these days?

I cruised twice on the SS Norway which had salt water pools but it was built in 1961. Haven't been on one since.

Most of Royal Caribbean's have saltwater pools. Last one I was in was on Jewel OTS - October 2013. Liberty OTS had fresh. (Her sisters Freedom and Independence also have fresh, I hear.)

Celebrity's Millennium class ships also has saltwater pools, I believe. Constellation does for sure - April 2014.

We hadn't even left the dock yet on our last cruise and the little's pool was closed for "an accident". Doesn't take long...
