Handicap Mom & Dad are coming with us, please advise.
Wel my family of 7 have been planning our trip for months now and today my dad informed me that they want to come.
We have been to Disneyland many time when I was growning up but it has always been their dreams to see my kids in Disney as they know all too well what the magic of this place does for the kids and the adults. We are already booked at CBR resort which we have never stayed at and I know this is a huge resort. I am concerned because my mom has a really hard time walking. She can get around but its hard for her and it takes her a lot longer then the rest of us naturally. She does use a cane but as I said she gets around ok. I am just worried that she won't be able to keep up. My dad also has a broken back but to look at him you would think there is nothing wrong with him. I am going to be joining their reservation to ours Tuesday morning but I am concerned that they won't be able to join us on our ADR as I already did them too. I need to know, well what I need to know to make this trip as easy & fun for them as I can. I have never been to Disney with someone who has a hard time getting around. What are some things I can do in advance to help make this trip easier on them. I want my children to enjoy themselves too after all we only go away once every 5 years so this trip is important to them too. I don't want them to miss out anything but I want to include my parents as much as possiable. Please advise, what do I need to do and what do I need to know? Thanks everyone.

but it sure sounds like they would benefit from using a rental scooter. If you can't afford two of them then at least one and maybe they can take turns with it. You can rent from outside of Disney and they will deliver to the resort. You can practice at home in grocery stores with a scooter if they are afraid of it.
This will save so much time; because, you won't be walking slow and no one will be hurting. I'll write more about activities on Monday. |

You may still be in luck with some ADRs and you may be able to change those reservations. I believe what the dining CM will do is see if another dinner booking is available for 9 people and then you book it. Right after that, the CM can cancel your existing reservation; so, you don't have two of them.
There's a lot of entertainment venues at Disney. It doesn't take much effort to watch a show. There's plenty of street entertainment in every park. There are schedules for this entertainment, too. Absolutely, mix rides and show and alternate them. This will give rest periods. You could at some areas let your parents see a show while you do on a thrill ride. A perfect example here would be to let your parents do Beauty and the Beast show in HS while you do TOT and/or RnR. You can separate at times, as well. Maybe, your parents can go back to the room for a rest and come back again for dinner and evening activities like fireworks. I hope they are cell phone savy. You have the option of a wheelchair, too to get your parents around. I do this for my 88 year old mother. She can't handle a scooter; so, this is what we do. Scooters will have access to handicap ride lines, but you will need to transfer to the rides. Scooters can sit in handicap areas for parades and such. Wheelchairs are a cheaper option and renting outside for a scooter is way cheaper than doing it at Disney. |
