Grand Cayman Butterfly Farm
Has anyone visited here during a previous cruise? Was it worth seeing and how big a place is it? The only pictures I could find were of the butterflies but didn't give a sense of the area itself.
Many thanks.

We just visited on 8-18-09 as part of the island tour. I didn't think it was anything special. The guide gave us a long talk and the kids (8 & 9) were bored very quickly. If it wasn't for the stop at the turtle farm the island tour would have been awful. The turtles were one of the major highlights for my kids. They let you pick up the small ones and they just thought that was great.

Hmmm...I've done butterfly farms on St. Thomas and St. Maarten. Didn't even know there was one on Grand Cayman.
Yes, the turtle farm was wonderful. We did it as part of Captain Marvin's island tour. The trip to heXX was fun...good place to mail postcards home! |

Last Sept while on a Double Dip cruise, we did a DCL excursion tour that included both the turtle farm and the butterfly farm (we also stopped at Hell and the rum factory). I'll start off by saying that we were four adults. The turtle farm was a lot of fun and actually I thought the tour was a bit rushed - I good have spent a little more time watching the different turtles. There wasn't a lot to Hell (except maybe the fact that the little boy in front of us on the bus was getting a big kick out of saying we were going to Hell
and his Mom had to remind him after we left that he could stop saying that now!!) and we had rain showers while we were there which didn't help. We then proceeded to the Butterfly farm. The guy that did that tour was very informative but I could see where the kids might be bored. We were then allowed to walk around and take all the pictures we wanted. Again, unless your child is really in to it, they may be bored. Some were trying to get the butterflies to land on them. I did find that the "brighter" your clothing the better chance you had of that. I had taken the red mesh bag that I received in our CC bag and a number of them were drawn to it. Now depending on the time of the year I would also imagine that it could be pretty hot in there since the vegetation that surrounds and runs through the area blocks any breeze you might get. We did enjoy it but I'm not sure I would need to do it again.

Thanks everyone.
We've been to the Turtle Farm and to Hell so think we'll pass on the Butterfly Farm and look into other excursions.

Butterfly farm
We went to the butterfly farm on our cruise in Jan. We had a 3 yr old and she did not make it through the LONG talk, neither did I. We were not that impressed with it. Enjoy your cruise!!!

We went in Feb 09. PP is right, the kids got bored with the talk, but enjoyed seeing the butterflies and trying to get them to land on them. It's not that big, I can't imagine more than an hour to see it all and listen to the talk. I would not do it again. We didn't do the turtle farm, we had the beach after.
