Pop might be too sad for us..where do we stay instead and still have that Disney feel

Well...we absolutely LOVE Pop Century but our first and only stay there (which was wonderful) was our first big family vacation including my sister, nephews, and our own kids...After we returned home my nephew enlisted and was killed in Iraq. He made our time at Pop as fun as it was! We are wanting to return to Disney but I'm worried that staying at Pop will be too sad for all of us,especially my sons who miss him so badly and my sister (his mom) who will be going back with us.Can anyone suggest another resort that has as much Disney feel for us??I know it might sound a little silly but it just feels like everywhere we look at Pop we will think of Cody..we will have kids ages 10,11,17,and 16 with us. Any suggestions will help...Thanks...

If I'm reading you correctly, you will have a party of six, which will mean two rooms, or an All Star Suite, or a FW cabin, unless your budget stretches to the larger suites or DVC villas.

An All Star Suite might be a good choice, because the kids could sleep in the living room, and be up until all hours, while you and your sister share the bedroom and catch some zzzz's. You would have two bathrooms, which would make getting ready much easier, plus the kitchenette for snacks and quick meals. The All Star resorts are similar to Pop, but the decor is different, so hopefully it would only give you happy thoughts.

The FW cabins are also nice. There is a double bed and bunks in the bedroom, so again, the kids could sleep there - there is also a TV in the bedroom for entertainment. Then there is a Murphy bed in the living room you and your sister could share. You would have a full kitchen here, but only one bathroom (although you could request a loop within walking distance to a comfort station, which would provide extra facilities). There are lots of activities for kids at the Fort, but it has more of a western theme than a Disney theme. If you are driving, it's nice to have your car right outside your cabin.

You could also opt for two rooms at any of the resorts - you would just have to decide what theme and amenities appeal to you the most.

you could opt to take a different Tack: instead of AVOIDING it.,. make an effort to go back and remember him and all the fun he had there.

It may offer comfort rather than make things awkward.

Just a suggestion from somebody whose husband just came home safely from 'over there' 2 days ago

I am in agreement with the PP. We lost my FIL 5 weeks after losing everything in Katrina ( our home contents and MIL/FIL home contents). In 2004 we all went for a family gathering since we knew it would probably be our last WDW trip with him. We rented him a scooter and had the best trip ever. In 2005 DH and I decided to do WDW as planned earlier in the year....before Katrina hit...we weren't sure about Pop's health and just had trip insurance if we needed it. Katrina was 8/29/05 and my FIL passed 10/04/05. Our trip was planned the first week of Dec. We kept it and went. Was it hard, yes. Were there triggers, yes. Did I loose it when they turned on Osbourne Lights, yes. Was it a wonderful trip that took us away for a bit of healing? Absolutely. If there is one place on Earth that can help hearts heal it is WDW. I know it will be hard but I think there will be lots of wonderful reminders of your nephew, not just the resort--but how special is that--that you have them there. I am so sure that those memories brought him laughter and comfort while he was deployed. I would look forward and know that he is happy you are at that resort where he will be with you in spirit. I think it would be OK for you all to go and remeber him that way. best of luck and I am truly grateful for your Nephew's service and sacrifice. God Bless...Lucretia

I'd go for the All Star Music family suite. There will be meaningful reminders in the parks and I personally would want a different resort at least the first time back. It is very recent IMO. I personally love Movies best because of the icons but since Music has the suites and it has been recently refurbed I'd go for it totally.

God bless your family and thank you.....

So very sorry for your loss and thanks and Blessings for Cody and his service.....

I agree with remembering can be healing. Everyone will remember his laughter and smile then maybe shed a tear....

We had a different loss...we had a divorce and I took the kids to disney to heal myself. It was wonderful sharing the memories of our favorite family vacations and a little sad but overall it helped me and the kids move forward...

Again god bless your family....you will have fun whatever you decide..

So sorry for your loss. I don't would not know what to do in that situation. I think I would go by how I think my kids would react.
I am grateful to your family for the tragic sacrifice that was made to keep my family safe from harm. I hope your trip brings you peace and you enjoy the time with your family!

Thank you and your beloved Cody for his service and sacrifice.

I agree that going back to POP could be a healing, special occasion. It sounds like Cody was a special guy, from making you all laugh and enjoy, to sacrificing his life to protect others. I think a trip honoring him is heroic of you all.
When a tragic loss happens no matter where you look you have reminders. Trying to avoid the tremendous feelings of grief may make your whole trip marred. Would Cody want you to go back to POP to remember the good????? If so then I say embrace ALL memories and go, cry when you feel like crying and laugh when you feel like laughing. Above all know you have an angel watching over you.

Thanks so much for your reply..and give your husband a big hug from our family and a tremendous thank you!! We really do want to go back to Pop...We loved it..Cody was only 19 when he was killed so he was still a big kid at Disney...He rode Tower of Terror probably 100 times or more in that week..haha
Our Disney trip was our first big family vacation and we wouldn't take a million dollars for the memories!

Wow, that is so sad. Cody sounds like a wonderful young man, so very sorry for your loss. I'm sure your family will find several meaningful things to do on our trip to honor Cody's memory. There are some threads on these boards about just such things.

Good luck to your family as you heal.
