Smile Another (Fabulous?) Disney Movie about the Sea

Ponyo will be released in theaters this Friday. It is a Disney/Studio Ghibli film.
I wonder if those onboard this weekend will get a chance to see it? We will definitely be going if it comes to our town.

Here is the the official website. It is from director Hayao Miyazaki. His other films include Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke and others. My kids are huge Miyazaki fans. We own all his other works so we are hoping this one will be just as good.

Here's the description:
From the Academy Award®-winning director and world-renowned Japanese animation legend Hayao Miyazaki comes PONYO, a story inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale “The Little Mermaid.” Already a box-office success in Japan, the story of a young and overeager goldfish named Ponyo (voiced by NOAH CYRUS) and her quest to become human features an outstanding roster of voice talent, including CATE BLANCHETT, MATT DAMON, TINA FEY, FRANKIE JONAS, CLORIS LEACHMAN, LIAM NEESON, LILY TOMLIN and BETTY WHITE.

since it has such a sea theme I can 'see' it becoming a regular onboard the ships.
However, it's not getting the major play/release that a lot of the major Disney films get. It's not even opening in my town this weekend.

I am sure that I am going to get flamed by this for judging the movie without even seeing it, but...it does not seem to be more than a knockoff of "The Little Mermaid" type thing...the animation is not even all that great appearing compared to other recent releases...I doubt we see it...sorry...Just my 2 cents worth..and you know hat 2 cents buys these days...NOTHING!

Maybe you just have to "be into" that type of animation to appreciate it's quality? I assure he's won boatloads of awards for his work; my children love all his movies. They are very unique and creative.

As for being a knockoff, well it's based on Hans Christian Andersen's story (1836) so I suppose Disney was the original "knock offer"
Disney must not have felt Ariel was too threatened, however, as they are distributing Ponyo.

As for the value of your opinion....I suppose mine is worth about the same.

How fun to have new movies shown on release day. Money saver for those lucky folks.

We love My Friend Totoro. The animation is not my favorite but the story is good. Haven't had the privilege to see others he has done. My son never says anything about the different types of animation he sees. I don't think young kids care. (I *love* Pixar.)

My kids can't wait to see it, and I am really hoping it is on the Magic on the 29th when we set sail!

Sailing on the Aug. 15 Magic cruise.

Where do they show new releases.

Do they ever show movies at night on the outside screen - I would love to sit on the deck and watch a movie at night.

Someone posted on one of the movie threads that the CM at DCL Reservations did not include "Ponyo" on the list of movies showing on the Wonder. It was not included when I checked on movies for our 8/16 sailing. Too bad, my DD is a huge Miyazaki fan and would be thrilled to see it on our cruise.

They do show movies on the Dumbotron. There will be a schedule for that in the Navigator each day. We saw the premear of One World on deck 9 after the tropical party on the EBPC repo last year. The kids loved it!

I just called to check -- the CM said that according to the info she had it would not be "premiering" on the ships on 8/13, but that does not mean that it won't be showing later. I will cross fingers that we get to see it on our cruise.
