Luggage checked early w/RAC - could it get to destination airport before you?

Just read the following on another thread (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2255761):

After a painstaking search for our luggage we found that it had arrived on an earlier flight and had been at the airport for hours.
Has anyone else had this happen to them? We have a 7:40pm flight with JB from MCO to White Plains. I was going to check our luggage with RAC when we have to check out of the room at 11am. Will our luggage be moved to the airport early, and possibly end up on an earlier flight than we are on?

This can happen whenever baggage is delivered to the airline very early; whether through RAC or if you just happen to get to the airport early for some reason. I've had it happen once or twice, but never when using RAC. It's possible, and I supposing that using RAC increases the chances that your bags will get to the airline very early, but not likely.

We have used the airline check-in for years and our luggage has always arrived with us. We usually check our luggage by 7:00 a.m. and our flight is usually around 6:00 p.m.

I have also had it happen on our way down to WDW. When we arrived at SSR there sat our luggage. So the person who was going to drive us in the golf cart to our room heard us commenting he went and got our luggage.
We had been delayed out of Atlanta but some how our luggage wasn't

I fly alot on business. There have been times when my luggage got there before me. One time I got to the airport early and instead of trying to run to get an earlier flight, I just took my time and had lunch. Well my luggage made the earlier flight and was just sitting in baggage claim off to the side when I got there. Another time recently I was in Dallas and I tried to do standby for an earlier flight. Turned out that flight was weight restricted and all the people who were originally ticketed didn't get on, let alone standbys. But my luggage made it!
